Tenure Track Faculty 6246BR College of Liberal Arts CLA-Dept of Performing Arts Faculty Type (Tenure Status): Tenure-Track Faculty Discipline: Faculty Rank: Assistant Professor Employment Category: Fulltime Anticipated Start Date: 15-Aug-2022 Detailed Job Description The Department of Performing Arts at the Rochester Institute of Technology invites applications for a tenure track position in Theatre Arts at the Assistant Professor level starting in August of 2022. Responsibilities include teaching, scholarship, and service to the Department of Performing Arts and the Performing Arts Scholars Program, the College of Liberal Arts, and RIT. The successful candidate will be expected to 1) teach courses in the theatre arts such as American musical theatre, dramatic theory and text analysis, fundamentals of directing, and digitally immersive theatre, as well as develop new courses in the Theatre Arts, 2) advise undergraduate students within department minors, and immersions; bring a vision for creating the best performing arts program in the country for non-majors, 3) direct one to two theatre productions a year, 4) develop an artistic or scholarly research agenda resulting in peer-reviewed scholarship and/or nationally recognized productions and publications, and 5) engage in service activities within the College of Liberal Arts and RIT, including with the Performing Arts Scholars Program. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong scholarly record and documented experience as a theatre director, including the productions of musicals or new and innovative forms of theatre. The candidate must have an enthusiasm for teaching undergraduates in the theatre arts in a general education setting and show evidence of teaching, creative, and scholarly work that aligns with and complements existing strategic and artistic initiatives within the Department, College, and Institute. A track record of or potential for generating original artistic production or refereed research is expected. Currently, the Department of Performing Arts has initiatives in musical theatre, new digitally focused forms of theatre, and accessibility in live performance. Across the Institute, initiatives focus on collaborative work that involves arts, technology and design. Of particular importance is the close working relationship with the Department of Performing Arts at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID). Candidates with experience in Deaf theatre, disability theatre, and/or American Sign Language are particularly encouraged to apply. Department/College Description The Department of Performing Arts is home to coursework, minors and immersions in the areas of music, theater, and the fine arts. The department offers the opportunity both in and out of the classroom to participate in musical ensembles, theater performances, and other experiential learning opportunities. We believe that the study of fine arts empowers our students to use technology in creative and innovative ways. The faculty come from a diverse range of scholarly, performance, and creative backgrounds and are highly respected scholars in their respective fields. The department is also the point of coordination for the Performing Arts Scholars Program, in which students have the opportunity to connect with other students that share similar passions for music, theater or dance. Coaches from several disciplines regularly organize social events where scholars can get to know other performing arts scholars and talk about new opportunities, as well as participate in excursions to local concerts and plays. The College of Liberal Arts is one of nine colleges within Rochester Institute of Technology. The College has over 150 faculty in 13 departments in the arts, humanities and social sciences. The College currently offers fourteen undergraduate degree programs and five Master degrees, serving over 800 students. Required Minimum Qualifications A PhD or equivalent terminal degree in Theatre or related field by the date of appointment. A strong record of university level experience as a theatrical director, including musicals. Commitment to and successful experience in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students. Experience in working collaboratively with colleagues and communities across disciplines. Demonstrated commitment to and excellence in teaching diverse student populations.
