Requisition Number: F_210180 Department: Vet & Biomedical Sciences-0845 Description of Work: Areas of work for this position include diseases that are of chronic nature and difficult to diagnose, such as Tuberculosis (TB), Bovine Tuberculosis and JD, anti-TB drug development and biodefense focuses on D-alanine racemase and D-alanine ligase, the presumed lethal target of D-cycloserine, an analog of D-alanine. Dr. Barletta hopes his research will lead to vaccines, including applications to the control of SARS -CoV2, new drugs and research tools to provide more accurate and faster tests to identify these pathogens. The applicant will focus on the proposal listed above but will be expected to participate in additional projects. The primary duties and responsibilities of this position are to perform sophisticated and advanced molecular biology and microbiology techniques (e.g., DNA / RNA isolation, RT- PCR , plasmid isolation and construction, phage propagation, drug susceptibility, gene inactivation, enzyme purification/assays, transformations, transposon and allelic exchange mutagenesis, Southern, Northern and Western blots, genomic library construction, culturing mycobacteria and macrophage, bovine macrophage infection assays, immunological assays for humoral and cell mediated immunity, sample preparation for genomics/proteomics/metabolomics/transcriptomics analyses, molecular procedures extracted from scientific publications, etc.). This individual will analyze data and prepare reports and manuscripts for scientific journals. In addition, the candidate is expected to contribute to the training of other graduate and undergraduate students, technical personnel, and support knowledge of other post-doctoral fellows in the laboratory. In addition to the above-described duties, the individual will be expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and/or university level. See http://www.unl.edu/equity/notice-nondiscrimination .  Minimum Required Qualifications: The candidate is required to have a Ph.D. degree in Microbiology, Molecular Genetics or a related field; be proficient in English; and have demonstrated abilities in at least one of the following areas: molecular microbiology, metabolism, Gram-positive pathogenesis, or biochemistry.  These research studies will also require the candidate to be able to use various laboratory equipment, have proficient computer skills using software applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Endnote, etc.), and the ability to accurately record data.  The candidate is required to have at least two (2) first-author research manuscripts published in peer reviewed scientific journals that are at the top of their field.  This individual is expected to have knowledge and compliance of environmental health and safety regulations, as well as the proper storage and disposal of chemicals, radioisotopes, and biohazardous materials.  Preferred Qualifications: Have five (5) or more years of experience in a laboratory setting. Demonstrate abilities in most or all areas – molecular microbiology, metabolism, Gram-positive pathogenesis and biochemistry. Experience in bacterial engineering, protein purification and bacterial engineering desirable. Can properly create, standardize, conduct and document research experiments independently in a university setting. Effective at troubleshooting and optimizing protocols.
