Job Description

At the heart of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) are Oracle Hardware and its Cloud Software stack.
  • Would you like to make a difference working at the forefront of Cloud infrastructure?
  • Are you interested in the foundational security elements of Cloud servers?
  • Do you like solving complex security, scale and performance problems?
If so, we are seeking a Principal Software Engineer who will help develop Root of Trust (RoT) capabilities for OCI servers.

About the Team

OCI's bare metal offering provides Cloud customers with unprecedented access to the "bare metal" hardware. This offering is a great draw for our customers who want the ability to install their custom firmware versions (storage drives, host NICs) to maximize performance and fine-tune system response. However, low-level access to the hardware can open the Cloud infrastructure to large attack vectors from malicious customers.

To address this issue, RoT devices provide the ability to deploy a chain of trusted firmware and software components into every programmable device within the server, ensuring that hosts can be securely wiped and provisioned.

Our team is responsible for implementing, validating and releasing firmware that runs on RoT devices. We also implement software packages that enable host provisioning and secure access to critical host subsystems.

Join our dynamic team as a Principal Software Engineer and work on exciting, enterprise-grade security products with a focus on deployment in Oracle Cloud. Our unique team works on everything from low-level hardware interfaces to user interfaces -- and everything in between. We control the full lifecycle of the software from architecture to release. Help shape the system management offerings for Oracle's cutting-edge systems while working with some of the most talented and experienced software developers in the business.

Specifically, you will contribute towards design & development of secure system management software using industry standard system and management protocols as well as adding unique value-add extensions to meet Oracle's customer needs. You will ensure the software design and implementation adheres to Oracle's secure software standards while being extensible, scalable, maintainable and simple to use.

You should be able draw the connections from low-level hardware interfaces, firmware elements, user level interfaces, to large, distributed sets of servers interacting at scale and in real-time.

You will also utilize a broad skill set to implement designs and participate in all phases of product development including:
  • Initial concept and platform architecture
  • Rapid prototyping, bring up and debug
  • Develop firmware for low-level devices
  • Manufacturing tools, assembly workflows
  • Write software at multiple levels to complete the product
  • Implement unit and system level tests for hardware and firmware qualification.
The candidate needs to have very strong communication skills (written, verbal) to communicate with other organizations within Oracle that use our offering. The candidate will also have the chance to work in a very dynamic environment working closely with the team developing industry leading Cloud System Solutions used in Oracle Cloud.

Our product development environment includes embedded device development (C), service software (Java, Python), systems management software (Java, Python and WebUI based frameworks), tools that run cross-architecture and cross-OS.

The candidate must possess great communication skills (written, verbal) and will be expected to use these skills to communicate with a geographically diverse team across many technology consumers.

  • Design and implement new software products and features.
  • Analyze software design and implementation of existing products and features with a focus on improving scalability, extensibility and security.
  • Work with individual developers and cross-functional teams to drive good design and code with a focus on security principles, best practices and standards compliance.
  • Interface with internal users and Oracle customers to understand their requirements and deliver solutions.
  • BA/BS or higher degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent industry experience
  • 7+ years of professional experience designing, implementing, testing, releasing, and maintaining firmware and software applications and systems in C/C++.
  • Experience in Firmware development, validation and deployment.
  • Experience with embedded systems development.
  • Experience with system-level scripting in Python, bash; preferably in an embedded Linux environment
  • Experience with Java and contemporary web services standards (REST, authentication/authorization methods)
  • Experience quickly understanding new codebases
  • Knowledge of security principles
  • Experience with communication protocols (I2C, SPI)
  • Experience with hardware manufacturing (PCB fab, assembly, mechanical, etc.)
  • Experience with lab debug/bring up and associated equipment (JTAG, logic analyzers, high speed oscilloscopes).
  • Strong troubleshooting and performance tuning skills.

Design, develop, troubleshoot and debug software programs for databases, applications, tools, networks etc.

As a member of the software engineering division, you will take an active role in the definition and evolution of standard practices and procedures. You will be responsible for defining and developing software for tasks associated with the developing, designing and debugging of software applications or operating systems.

Work is non-routine and very complex, involving the application of advanced technical/business skills in area of specialization. Leading contributor individually and as a team member, providing direction and mentoring to others. BS or MS degree or equivalent experience relevant to functional area. 7 years of software engineering or related experience.
