About Our Group

Our Global Investment Banking group supports corporate and institutional clients with strategic advice and corporate finance advisory services (such as mergers and acquisitions) as well as debt and equity fundraising. Our vision is to be the preferred investment banking and capital markets banking partner to our clients, across multiple products and services.

The Financial Institutions Investment Banking ("FIG") team has deep sector expertise and proven deal execution capabilities combined with a full suite of investment banking capital markets solutions, as well as corporate banking and treasury services from our corporate banking partners, which allows us to assist at every stage of our FIG clients' business lifecycle. As an experienced FIG team in this dynamic and rapidly changing industry, we have the capabilities to advise, structure and finance a broad array of noteworthy and complex transactions in the US.

Our group focuses on a broad set of financial institutions clients in a variety of subectors across specialty finance, financial technology, insurance, asset and wealth management and others.

Our ecosystem is fast-changing and the successful applicant will help assist our clients in many capacities including strategic mergers and acquisitions and financings across debt and equity markets.

With guidance from Managing Directors and/or Executive Directors, you will complete assignments that impact the firm's bottom line through transaction and financing execution, client relationship support, industry and company analysis, and the overall communication and collaboration with banking partners across our global offices. The role will provide you with a wealth of learning and an ability to observe and influence the strategic direction of our clients' businesses, with direct exposure to client executives and boards of directors as well as senior CIBC leadership.

How You'll Succeed

Associates on the US FIG teamwill be expected to provide a broad range of analytical, research and presentation preparation support to senior bankers within the group. Typically, Associates are assigned to a variety of transactions and advisory projects and must have strong prioritization and multi-tasking capabilities.

Applying your strengths in quantitative analysis to create and direct complex financial analyses and models while extracting the "big picture" implications of such analyses will be critical to your success.

The role of an Associate is challenging and fast-paced. It requires dedication, passion for the industry and a very solid work ethic. You must be able to accept flexibility in required personal time commitments to complete work assignments.

As part of the US FIG deal team, you will gain exposure to working with individuals from various groups across the firm globally.A team approach to executing coverage, M&A advisory and financing assignments is designed to provide progressive on-the-job training.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Assist in executing all facets of the group's mandates
  • Conduct industry research and analysis to assist in the identification and/or analysis of investment banking business opportunities
  • Play a key role in the preparation of client proposals and "pitchbooks"and the execution of client mandates:
    • Develop and audit sophisticated financial models
    • Participate in cross functional teams and liaising with other units of CIBC Capital Markets in executing mandates or preparing proposals for clients
    • Prepare industry and financial analysis to assist with the development of client recommendations
    • Lead industry comparable value and transaction precedent analyses
  • Assist in company due diligence investigations
  • Support senior investment banking colleagues and directing and training analyst teammates
  • Take advantage of in-depth technical and industry knowledge, as well as the geopolitical environment to generate transaction ideas/opportunities that can be discussed with the relevant relationship manager and deal/coverage teams

Relationship Building - Grow your internal and external networks by participating in the following activities:
  • Coordinating client-focused and/or deal-focused "brainstorming" sessions with relevant team members and product specialists
  • Liaising with other units of CIBC Capital Markets in preparing proposals for clients
  • Developing relationships and actively communicating with various appropriate contacts at our clients
  • Developing and maintaining an internal network with product groups, other business groups, etc.
  • Developing and maintaining an external network with the market (i.e. key stakeholders, prospects, etc.)
  • Supporting CIBC's image through involvement in community activities and
  • Actively managing and mentoring the analysts that work with you and providing regular feedback to them

  • Education You've Completed. Finance, accounting, mathematics, business, engineering, computer science or economics undergraduate degree. An MBA, Masters in Finance or completion of the CFA is an asset, but not a requirement.
  • Industry Experience. 2 to 4 years of previous experience in one or more of corporate finance, investment banking/capital markets, and/or private equity or similar experience. Experience must have included meaningful financial modeling and analysis. Working knowledge of the financial institutions sector is an asset, but not a requirement.
  • Financial Skills. Excellent analytical ability, including demonstrated knowledge of valuation techniques and practices, including cash flow and returns analysis. Knowledge of accounting principles relating to financial statement preparation and business combinations.
  • Technical Skills (Programs, Methodologies, Systems). Strong quantitative technical skills as it relates to basic computer applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), industry technology (FactSet, Bloomberg) and other applicable software.
  • Collaborative and Professional. Well-developed interpersonal and relationship building skills in order to develop, manage and leverage relationships with clients, and internal and/or external business partners. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills sufficient to provide detailed explanation and interpretation of factual and conceptual information and ideas related to complex technical and conceptual issues. Unquestioned professionalism, ethics and reputation and proven ability to exercise strong independent judgment when making business decisions and/or representing CIBC Capital Markets.
