The Senior Instructional Designer will partner with stakeholders, subject matter experts and/or business partners to identify training needs and develop comprehensive learning solutions that focus on audience understanding and retention. Additionally, they will support AutoNation strategic initiatives and tactical processes.

This position will take a senior role providing curriculum design and technical lead support to the other Instructional Designers. Specialized writing skills are required using the latest adult learning techniques, as well as a variety of other learning technologies including gamification, mobile learning, and performance support to improve retention of information and application of learned skills and behaviors.

Organizational Relationships:



Reports directly to the Manager of Instructional Design & Development. Partners closely with the following to assess organizational needs and support learning and development programs that meet the strategic needs of AutoNation:
  • Learning & Development team members
  • Corporate and Region/Market Trainers / Subject Matter Experts
  • Operational Corporate/Region Leadership
  • Field HR team
Primary Job Responsibilities:



Instructional Design & Development
  • Apply Adult Learning Principles and proven Instructional Design models to strategize effective and comprehensive end to end learning solutions.
  • Establish and adhere to milestones contained within project plans and according to established development standards
  • Design blended learning solutions to support business objectives. Working with operations, field and learning teams to create the right blend of learning methods to produce the desired performance outcome
  • Develop and write facilitator, participant guides, job aids and performance support, etc. for live and virtual instructor-led training, as well as eLearning, video and/or electronic support tools
  • Monitors industry trends and best practices for training delivery tools and platforms and recommends new approaches when appropriate
  • Participates in pilot sessions of key implementation rollouts to gather feedback, make updates and work with trainers through ongoing audits to ensure design is executed as intended.
Leading Projects
  • Lead project meetings, prioritize, resolve conflicts, and manage project plans in accordance with department budgets and timelines
  • Establish positive relationships with Subject Matter Experts (SME) to support operational applicability in content development
  • Assist the Corporate and Field Operations teams in the overall coordination and implementation of training programs
  • Functions as a Learning and Development subject matter expert to ensure that projects meet the training needs of the intended audience.
  • Liaisons between project stakeholders, sponsors, project team members and L&D team members
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Five years' experience in instructional design/curriculum development
  • Ability to create learning materials to include facilitator/instructor and participant manuals, pre and post work, assessments, certification plans, job aids and other documentation and follow up tools
  • Proven Instructional Design and development capability (Use of ADDIE or SAM models)
  • Proven abilities/experience designing instruction for in-person delivery, virtual delivery, and eLearning delivery
  • Superior interpersonal, writing and communication skills enabling interfaces with all levels of organization and client stakeholders
  • Proficiency or equivalent experience with course development tools such as Articulate, Adobe Creative Suite, MS Office Suite, etc.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Project management experience, preferred
  • Automotive experience preferred but not required
  • CPLP/CPTD Certification, advanced degree in Adult Learning, Instructional Design, or similar education or experience
