Job Description

Global trading networks and supply chains depend upon efficient and well-organized logistics. Companies that manage the shipment of millions of orders want to reduce transportation costs, need to monitor the progress of shipments through global networks, and must provide visibility to shippers, customers, and service providers alike. A reduction in transportation costs of even 1% can lead to millions of dollars of savings per year.

Oracle Transportation Management (OTM) is a sophisticated transportation management system that allows just this type of functionality. OTM is a large software product typically used by large retailers (e.g., IKEA, Adeo), large manufacturers (e.g., Dell, GE), and large transportation companies (e.g., Schneider, DHL) to manage their transportation of goods. OTM has been first in the transportation management system (TMS) space for at least a decade. The US development office is in West Conshohocken PA (suburban Philadelphia); there is also a development team in Oracle's India Development Center (IDC). Overall, there are about 100 development team members (including developers, QA testers, documentation, etc.), split roughly half and half between the US office and IDC. This opening is located in West Conshohocken, PA.

Within the OTM Development team, the Planning team develops the sophisticated algorithms and optimization techniques that allow OTM to figure out how to reduce costs in a shipper's transportation network. Real-world transportation scenarios can include elaborate variations on familiar optimization problems, such as the Traveling Salesman Problem, Knapsack Packing puzzles, Network Path-finding, and other constraint-based problems that can be modeled as linear or integer programs. We have also started coordinating with Oracle's Machine Learning (ML) teams to bring ML and AI into OTM Planning. In other words, the Planning team is a good place for people who enjoy solving hard abstract problems that are also extremely relevant to the real world. As part of our team, you would:

• Be a part of an Agile development team enhancing our world class products
• Develop front-end and back-end software in Java/J2EE/SQL/Oracle Jet
• Design innovative algorithmic/optimization/ML solutions for real world transportation problems

The Planning team includes 30 developers in three teams. Half are in the US. We develop the software in Java, on a J2EE architecture, using an Oracle database. We also integrate with several third-party software packages. The positions in this team require a strong knowledge of Java and object-oriented programming, good analytical skills to understand the business scenarios, creativity to come up with the software approaches to solve the problems, and the ability to work well in a close-knit team. We seek candidates with:

• Outstanding Java/J2EE Development skills
• Experience with Web Services including REST and/or SOAP
• Strong SQL or Oracle database skills
• Prior experience with implementing analytics and machine learning into products

Design, develop, troubleshoot and debug software programs for databases, applications, tools, networks etc.

As a member of the software engineering division, you will assist in defining and developing software for tasks associated with the developing, debugging or designing of software applications or operating systems. Provide technical leadership to other software developers. Specify, design and implement modest changes to existing software architecture to meet changing needs.

Duties and tasks are varied and complex needing independent judgment. Fully competent in own area of expertise. May have project lead role and or supervise lower level personnel. BS or MS degree or equivalent experience relevant to functional area. 4 years of software engineering or related experience.
