Scheduled Hours 40 Position Summary Seeking a Staff Scientist to conduct research projects and assist with research activities of the Millman Lab at Washington University School of Medicine. Our biomedical research laboratory uses human pluripotent stem cells for the study and treatment of diabetes. We have a wide diversity of projects involving stem cells differentiation, genetic engineering with CRISPR, disease modeling, transplantation into animal models of diabetes, biomedical engineering, bioinformatics, and single-cell sequencing technologies. The ideal candidate should be capable of spearheading and supervising independent projects, as well as providing support for ongoing studies in the lab as needed. This position assists in developing and conducting research projects, including experimental design, data analysis and documentation of experimental results. Primary Duties & Responsibilities Following instructions and discussions with principal investigator, designs research protocols, including developing procedures for the collection, verification, and management of data. Acts as a project leader and closely mentors and supervises one or more research technicians and assist them with troubleshooting and optimizing experiments. Assists with grant preparation and reporting. Performs complex statistical analysis of data collected and writes interpretative reports. Verifies the correctness of the data submitted and makes recommendations based on these analyses. Documents research topics and prepares and submits papers based on research work to publications and committees for publication or presentation to peers. Conducts literature searches related to research project. Working Conditions This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological, chemical and radioactive hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals. Preferred Qualifications Ph.D. degree in a field relevant to studying stem cells, cellular biology, and diabetes. Strong, independent grant writing skills. Possess a strong understanding of CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing system, bioinformatics and single-cell sequencing technologies. Experience with techniques in molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry. Experience as a supervisor for technical staff and/or students. Organized, independent, and self-motivated. Demonstrated ability to be highly productive in a fluid and collaborative work environment. Analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills. Ability to analyze and interpret statistical data and to communicate data in a clear, concise manner. Computer literacy, including the ability to use a variety of software packages to analyze data. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact successfully with a broad range of individuals within the University. Required Qualifications Masterâ™s degree with four years of experience in research lab operations or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling nine years. Grade R10 Salary Range $44,700.00 - $81,200.00 / Annually The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
