AWS API Engineer


The ideal candidate has experience supporting United States Government (USG) customer(s). This position requires the ability to interface with multiple stakeholders (both internal & external) in various organizations to assist with stakeholder management. Additionally, the position requires the individual to quickly move through the internal Alion processes to make the program successful. The incumbent should also have the desire to expand their role within the contract to assist with the continued growth.

Duties Include:

  • Responsible for the implementation and growth of certain elements of the AWS cloud infrastructure.
  • As part of the team, you will write the code that both creates and configures the infrastructure needed to run applications.
  • Build software solutions where the problem is not well defined.
  • Create reusable, effective, and scalable code on cloud-native applications using services like Amazon API Gateway, etc.
  • Interact with other Data Engineers and Data Scientists to solve problems related to data and implement high impact, new solutions.
  • Identify bottlenecks and bugs in the system and develop solutions.
  • Conduct software analysis, testing, updating, and debugging.
  • Lead technical projects to deploy new tools or features.
  • Take the initiative to determine how a system should work and share your opinion if you identify a better approach.
  • Continue to develop professionally by means of education, certification, or mentorship with a more seasoned team member.

Skills and Experience You Need:

  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software-development experience 2+ years programming experience with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design 1+ years of experience contributing to the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new current systems.
  • AWS Experience designing and building web environments on AWS, which includes working with services like EC2, ELB, RDS, and S3.
  • Ability to interact with other principal architects, engineers, and data scientists to implement impactful new data as a service (DaaS) solutions.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering or other related scientific or technical discipline. Education and work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience.
  • Active secret, TS, or TS/SCI security clearance with ability to obtain Poly.

How You'll Stand Out:

  • Experience in several tech tools and platforms like Hadoop, Kafka, Kubernetes, Redshift, Scala, Spark, or SQL
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and management to collect requirements, describe software product features, and technical designs.
  • Experience building complex software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers.
  • Prior experience working in an Agile (DevOps) environment.
  • Three plus years experience with AWS cloud services.
  • Seven plus years experience finding and fixing critical, customer facing production issues.
  • Experience with Linux/UNIX systems and the best practices for deploying applications to those stacks.
  • Knowledge of APIs and RESTful services.
  • Experience with different databases, including working knowledge of SQL, relational data stores.
  • Experience with infrastructure configuration and automations processes and tools: Terraform, Puppet, Ansible, Chef, Fabric.
  • Experience in the development of object-oriented software with languages like Java, C++, Python or Ruby ideally in SOA applications.
  • Understanding of industry standards for building services in IaaS/PaaS/SaaS in Cloud environments.
  • DOD8570 certification desired
  • Located near St. Louis, MO or Springfield, VA.
  • Certified AWS Solutions Architect
  • This position supports a U.S. Government contract; per the Executive Order 14042 issued on September 9, 2021, personnel must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to fill this role.

Occasional travel may be required.
