Requisition Number: F_210124 Department: Food Science & Technology-0836 Description of Work: The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Food Science and Technology is seeking a Computational Bacterial Population Genomicist at the rank of Research Assistant Professor with outstanding computational skills to develop a multi-disciplinary program in Food Safety that emphasizes evolution and ecology of pathogens and non-pathogens in food production environments.  The research program will serve as a hub for collaboration with faculty in the department of Food Science and Technology, the Nebraska Food for Health Center ( NFHC ), University of Nebraska Medical Center ( UNMC ), the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory ( NPHL ), and Nebraska One Health program. In particular, the incumbent will be expected to lead development and implementation of bioinformatics programs and pipelines that use high-performance computing for population genomics analysis of whole genome sequencing data and metagenomic data and to leverage these platforms/pipelines for large-scale research projects in collaborative research teams with FDST , NFHC , UNMC , NPHL , and Nebraska One Health, targeting food safety and gastrointestinal wellness. This position will facilitate seeking strategic federal and private funding for research in the specific area of One Health focused on the emerging problem of zoonotic bacterial antimicrobial resistance. These working groups led by the RAP will facilitate effective participation of UNL in the National Institute for Antimicrobial Resistance Research and Education; will facilitate strong collaborations with relevant agencies (e.g., USDA Food Safety Inspection Service) to leverage ongoing regulatory surveillance; and will facilitate collaborations of NFHC and programs at UNMC and NPHL .   This position is fully focused on research. Specific duties are: Develop a multi-disciplinary research program at the intersection between data science, microbiology, and microbial population genomics with Public Health applications. Leverage the ProkEvo platform to develop strong collaborations with regulatory agencies (e.g., USDA Food Safety Inspection Service) to promote exchange of data and integration of population genomics into ongoing regulatory testing. Integrate agriculture (livestock industry) and Public Health applications to aid in achieving Nebraska One Health goals. Seek independent funding through governmental institutes ( NSF , USDA , and NIH ), and private foundations. Preferred Qualifications: Three years of training beyond the doctorate in bacterial population genomics.  Minor in statistics or other relevant data science.  Job Type: 12 Month (Faculty Only)
