Senior Materials Scientist 6019BR Golisano Institute for Sustainability CIMS CSP & C3R Detailed Job Description Golisano Institute for Sustainability is looking for an engineer or scientist with strong leadership skills, experimental and analytical materials background, and a passion for solving real-world problems. In our environment, researchers work on a wide variety of products and technologies, work with undergraduate and graduate students, and are engaged in collaborative research with leading companies on projects in diverse project areas such as: advanced manufacturing and remanufacturing, recycling, energy generation and storage systems, materials development and analysis, sustainability and sustainable design, sustainable transportation, and prognostics development. Essential responsibilities include: Perform/manage materials analysis for internal research, and for external customers, to support product failure analysis and industrial process quality improvement Develop proposals for external funding Prepare and present/publish technical results of research Develop enhanced laboratory capability for materials analysis, in particular non-destructive evaluation technologies Support expansion of existing research programs that support sustainable industrial development, with a focus on: remanufacturing, recycling, process material and energy efficiency, condition assessment and prognostics, and additive manufacturing. Support sustainable product design efforts from materials perspective Department/College Description The Golisano Institute for Sustainability (GIS) is a leading sustainability research and education organization at Rochester Institute of Technology. GIS is made up of a diverse set of academic programs and applied research centers focused on the optimization of industrial systems to maximize material and energy efficiency while minimizing adverse environmental impacts. We work with partners in all areas of industry, government, and business to put technology and innovation to work for a sustainable future. The diverse perspectives we bring to a project or problem reflect our broad expertise across industries and the many partnerships weve formed with forward-thinking corporations, government agencies, and research organizations over the last 30 years. Our six industry-facing applied research centers focus on sustainable manufacturing, energy, transportation, and buildings. They work to develop advanced technologies, sustainable industrial processes and practices, and data-informed policy recommendations. Each year, about 100+ companies, governments, and other organizations engage GISs research centers on a variety of projects to solve technical problems, innovate products or processes, research manufacturing technologies, reduce their environmental footprint, or commercialize a new technology. Research center projects are led by full-time professional staff with significant industry experience and access to nearly 90,000 square feet of infrastructure including state- of-the-art labs and testbeds. Required Minimum Qualifications GIS is seeking a proven candidate with above average skills who has a demonstrated track record in his/her chosen area of materials, and interest to learn and grow with others. A minimum of 5-10+ years work-experience with industry, national lab, or equivalent in materials development or analysis, or process development. Special skills: Demonstrated ability to conduct applied research, including proposal writing, project scoping, and project management Experience in analysis of materials and material failures Analytical ability to solve challenging design/development problems Strong organization and motivational skills Significant experience in metals and metallurgy, with flexibility to work on diverse materials, technical challenges, and application domains is required Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills, for both technical and non-technical audiences Preferred Qualifications Experience in developing and transferring processes from the laboratory to the production floor Understanding of, or experience with, remanufacturing, recycling technologies, or additive manufacturing Experience with protective materials (incl fabrics) for high temperature applications Experience writing proposals for industrial or agency funded research projects PhD Strongly Preferred Preferred Qualifications Professional Area: Employment Category: Fulltime Staff Job Function: Wage Band: Required Application Documents How to Apply In order to be considered for this position, you must apply for it at: http://careers.rit.edu/staff .
