As a leader within the SPG Engineering Organization at Applied Materials, you will help define and implement world-leading solutions for advanced semiconductor processing equipment. In this role you will be a Systems Engineer (SE) with technical program manager experience, working in collaboration with design engineering experts to define the system requirements, specifications, and make architectural decisions while helping lead multidisciplinary projects for the integration team.

As a member of the Systems Integration Team, you will help drive the integration activities for new and existing products, sub-systems, and processes across many divisions within Applied Materials. Some responsibilities include defining system architecture, integration of process chambers on platforms, development of interface requirements, troubleshooting systems and spending time in labs and manufacturing towards product development, define business processes, help with group operational activities, and drive new product development activities.

This position requires a leader with a passion for engineering and leading technical teams. The best candidate will have mechanical or electrical design and development experience, more than 5 years of experience in the semiconductor equipment industry and familiarity with taking engineering solutions from concept, to testing and through to volume manufacturing. If you are a design expert with strong leadership skills, this may be the perfect next step in your career. In this role, you will have responsibility for concurrent projects while helping coordinate activities across local (US) and regional (India) team and other internal groups within Applied Materials. This will require strong organizational skills, confidence in communicating with directors and executives across the company, and the ability to develop strong relationships with product development peers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and/or develop and execute complex projects that have a substantial mix of electrical, mechanical, physics, algorithms and software design; and attend design reviews and provide input to meet market requirement specifications (MRS) and hardware/software specifications.  Ensure designs meet market requirement specifications (MRS).  Coordinate with project marketing and management to understand system requirements.  Be able to chair architecture brainstorming meetings and drive the systems process to down select to a final architecture of a top-level system.
  • Write detailed specifications that cover all aspects of subsystem modules including interfaces to the product by using systems analysis to create diagrams and specifications (software specifications, PI&D schematics, support documentation for safety compliance and 3rd party certifications).
  • Create concepts for complex architectural design approaches.  Lead team evaluations of architectures to provide recommendation for best system solution approach.
  • Problem identification and troubleshooting a wide range of difficult, complex engineering problems in field of technical expertise, including serviceability and manufacturability.
  • Support System Integration during the assembly and final testing of new product designs.
  • Interface with other groups to workout design, systems architecture development and integration issues.
  • Define all equipment interfaces and systems architecture and insure they are up to date and documented.
  • Work with vendors to develop new competitive products, including development of key suppliers.
  • Prepares project plans and drives the project from conception and planning to implementation. Will participate in the development of strategies, processes and resources.
  • Manages project schedule and task details by utilizing project management tools such as reports, tracking charts, checklist and project scheduling software.
  • Drives cost schedule performance of equipment for internal and external customers and vendors worldwide.
  • Participates on multifunctional design teams comprised of internal, external and/or matrixed headcount to complete projects.  Provides technical input to team members to achieve project goals.
  • Helps coordinate activities and leads programs within group across local (US) and regional (India) team
  • Interfaces and coordinates within the division to define project objectives, provide status updates and prepare for release and deployment.
  • Provides engineering and business process expertise to team and other members on various standard programs / issues.
  • Identifies and resolves potential complications within the project and develops solutions for resolution.
  • Helps with operational running the business activities, processes, reports, dashboards, and technical program design reviews.

Functional Knowledge

  • Demonstrates depth and/or breadth of expertise in own specialized discipline or field
  • High system level understanding of semiconductor equipment and the common components that make up the equipment (controls, gages, pneumatics, plumbing water/gas, heat exchangers, pumps, generators, robotics, wafer handling, heaters, vac vent modules, mainframes, AC/DC distribution, etc.)
  • Solid electro/mechanical & control systems understanding (I/O and interlocks)
  • Strong technical program management skills

Education & Qualifications

  • The position requires 10+ years of experience or equivalent
  • BS Degree in Engineering (Masters or PhD preferred) with a preference of experience in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • Demonstrated success as project leader or program manager is required and previous experience in the semiconductor equipment industry is preferred
