The Propulsion Test Engineer owns the test stand coordination of propulsion related hardware throughout the test campaign such as design of the test stand to support test hardware, flow control, tubing and pipe sizing and design, facility P&ID, release of appropriate documents, parts procurement, assembly, integration, facility data reduction and test support of propulsion hardware development. This individual must have a strong working knowledge in fluid system design (pneumatic and liquid systems), mechanical design, data analysis and experience in subsystem layout, interface control documentation and requirements definition. The ideal candidate will be experienced in the design, test, and evaluation of fluid systems (ideally with some rocket propulsion background), analysis in support of testing, experience with various fluids including cryogenic fluids. Must be able to demonstrate leadership ability. Experience in liquid rocket engines and thrusters is highly desirable.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Lead a small team in test stand buildup and operation of rocket engine hardware

  • Prepare the test facility for upcoming test campaigns

  • Have working knowledge of fluid systems and work with other test engineers and technicians to get it built up for upcoming tests

  • Knowledge of sizing valves, actuators, regulators, valve & regulator control systems

  • Develop P&ID and test operating procedures to successfully execute a test

  • Be able to operate as a test conductor and make sound decisions during a test

  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings and schematics

  • Originate specifications, control documents, verification and validation plans, procedures, reports, or other documentation in support of test and development activities

  • Lead and work with other Engineers to implement operating procedures, resolve system issues and provide technical information

  • Prepare material for, and conduct, periodic test design reviews, test readiness reviews, facility data analysis reviews

  • Understand, plan, and execute technical activities in accordance with SNC policies, procedures, work instructions and specific Customer requirements

  • Ensure conformance of products with Engineering design and performance specifications

  • Execute engineering design and development activities consistent with Customer quality, cost, and schedule requirements

  • Knowledge of Matlab, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Visio, SolidWorks beneficial

 

Must-haves:

  • Requires a BS in Related Field; MS preferred.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the aerospace, or closely related, industry

  • Experience in Matlab, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Visio, SolidWorks is preferred

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are a must

  • Ability to rapidly work with minimal supervision on projects involving both small and large engineering teams

  • Previous experience and skills in fluid flow, control and test

  • Must be able to work in a highly collaborative, fast paced environment with emphasizes in rapid prototyping, testing, and fielding of capabilities

  • Ability to travel occasionally

Preferred:

  • Experience in liquid rocket engines, thrusters is highly desirable. 

  • Understanding of applying and interpreting Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5

  • Experience in Engineering Simulation such as Finite Element structural Analysis (FEA), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and Thermal Analysis

  • Background in the Aerospace and Defense Industry

  • Knowledge of industry-standard mechanical design principles, to include, but not limited to parametric design, model-based definition, material hardware selection, manufacturing, and production processes
