Laboratory Shift Supervisor - (Aurora, North Carolina, U.S.A.)

This position is located in Aurora, North Carolina, U.S.A. and is not available for remote work.

What you will do:
  • Supervise quality control testing activities at the Aurora facility, including the Main, Purified Acid, and Phosphoric Acid Laboratories during a 12-hour shift
  • Supervise 7-8 employees assigned to their crew to ensure activities are performed safely, environmental guidelines are met, and accurate analytical data is generated
  • Allocation and prioritization of manpower during process upsets to assist and support production needs in timely manner
  • Support and encourage employee participation in our Behavior Based Safety Program including the Light Keepers Process
  • Supervise the activities of the support team and to ensure the health and safety of the workers who work and enter the laboratory
  • Perform all assigned process control analyses following a routine sample schedule and enters results into LIMS including using a variety of instrumentation and methods
  • Respond to requests for priority assays by logging samples and results into LIMS
  • Produce analytical results for rock, solids, fertilizer, Phos Acid, Acid, PAP Process, and PAP Shipment stations to assist in quality control / quality assurance of company products and entering results into LIMS
  • Report all control analyses when LIMS is down
  • Identify off-grade and abnormal shipments and control analyses and reports to the Laboratory Supervisor or Chemist
  • Analyze non-routine samples from customers, R&D, and special process projects
  • Perform minor maintenance on instrumentation including calibrating, troubleshooting, and changing out reagents
  • Monitor quality assurance in the lab and reanalyzes questionable assays
  • Perform statistical quality control charting
  • Follow safety and environmental procedures
  • Authorization and release of all PAP rail and truck shipments from Aurora
  • Generate certificates of analysis for customer product shipments (motor vessels, railcars, trucks)
  • Investigate and report all environmental incidents during nights, weekends and holidays, oftentimes including the directing of spill containment operations; including spills that require reporting to outside and state and federal agencies
  • Monitor investigate and report incidents at the plant site Wastewater Treatment Plant during nights, weekends and holidays
  • Monitor and take actions relating to the Laboratory Neutralization System during nights, weekends and holidays
  • Serve as a technical resource to the shift and provides coaching to Operators I & II assigned to the shift
  • Provide training for Step Up technician(s) for the purpose of filling in when the Operator A is out of the Main Laboratory
  • Provide training, coordinates hands-on testing and completes progression plan documentation for promotions within shift team
  • Follow established Safe Food and Good Laboratory Practices at all times, interactions associated with Food Safety are as follows:
    • Perform all duties necessary to meet FSSC 22000, Nutrien Phosphate, and any regulatory requirements or standards as prioritized by Nutrien Phosphate
    • Inform management of any food safety or quality issues or any processes which become non-compliant with specified requirements
    • Ability to initiate action to prevent the occurrence of nonconformities relating to food safety and the quality of the product, processes, quality system, or safety system
    • Identify and record any problems relating to food safety and the quality of the ingredients, processes, quality system, or safety system
    • Control further processing or delivery of nonconforming product in terms of food safety and quality issues until the deficiency or unsatisfactory condition has been corrected
What you will bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in physical science or at least 10 years of experience in a related laboratory environment is preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential
  • Math skills
  • Ability to manually calculate results to be reported to one or more customers if LIMS is not available, the Laboratory Shift Supervisor may need the
  • Ability to pass a departmental math test
  • Interested internal applicants for the Laboratory Shift Supervisor position must be in the process of completing the Supervisor's Assessment Curriculum prior to being eligible for the position
  • All STPP requirements for Operator II completed and at least five years of supervisory experience - Internal Candidates
  • A commensurate combination of education and experience in a physical science laboratory setting to include at least five years of supervisory experience - External Candidates
  • Adaptability and flexibility are required due to ever changing plant conditions that alter laboratory priorities
  • The Laboratory Shift Supervisor requires knowledge in Good Laboratory Practices, Food Safety, and Feed Safety
