HJF is seeking a Research Physician to support the Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) located at the Rockledge Office in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to MHRP.

The Research Physician will provide scientific, technical and programmatic support services to the U.S. Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), based at HJF in Bethesda, Maryland, and WRAIR in Silver Spring, Maryland. The Research Physician will contribute to a broad project portfolio in all stages of development, from concept to final report inclusive of presentation at scientific conferences and publication in the peer-reviewed literature. These projects range from observational cohort studies to clinical trials and vaccine product development. Activities will be executed both in the US and internationally. We are seeking a qualified clinical research physician (M.D. or equivalent) with experience in regulated clinical research, excellent written/oral communication skills, and the ability to effectively lead and contribute to complex, multidisciplinary, international research projects.

Responsibilities:
  1. Designs, directs, and participates in clinical research protocols in conjunction with research physicians and scientists in support of the MHRP mission, including observational and interventional studies related to the prevention and treatment of HIV and other infectious diseases. May serve as Principal Investigator, Protocol Chair, Associate Investigator, Consultant, or other designated role and be responsible for maintaining ethical and regulatory compliance as well as the integrity of study data and health and welfare of study participants. Contributes to the creation, composition, maintenance and execution of clinical research protocols and all supporting documents including study related budgets and status reports.
  2. Directs and participates in the submission and continuing review of clinical research protocols to all applicable Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) and regulatory bodies, to include the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other relevant international and domestic agencies and collaborative partners.
  3. Coordinates scientific and laboratory input, output and analyses related to clinical research protocols and scientific goals. Analyzes data from clinical trials and observational studies. Prepares program status reports to the institution, regulatory agencies, and sponsors of the clinical research programs scientific papers for presentation at local and national meetings and for publication in medical and scientific periodicals.
  4. Examines, interviews, counsels, and manages research participants in U.S. protocols, including protocols executed at Department of Defense facilities. Provides appropriate medical oversight and study-related clinical decision making including the identification, classification, management and reporting of adverse events. Understands and implements the concepts and best practices of ethical research per CITI, HIPAA, and Good Clinical Practice training standards. Provides evaluation and treatment of medical conditions, as appropriate to medical license and specialty board certification.
  5. Participates in travel for protocol training and other site visits in support of domestic and international clinical research protocols.
  6. Writes and manages grant proposals to obtain funding from multiple funding sources.
  7. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This will include responsibility to maintain licensure, credentialing, medical board certification and other certifications and to participate in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge and experience with the development and execution of clinical research programs, including knowledge of applicable U.S. regulations governing the conduct of medical research within the DoD and under the auspices of the FDA; Thorough knowledge of clinical medicine and demonstrated clinical competence; Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills; Ability to successfully lead and/or participate as a member of complex, multidisciplinary research teams; Ability to make effective presentations and publish research data; Laboratory experience in the field of HIV immunology or related fields preferred but not required.

Minimum Education: Doctoral degree (MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent) required for this position.

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: Minimum of 0-2 years required for this position.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration:Must be able to obtain licensure to practice medicine in the State of Maryland; Must be board certified or board eligible, preferably in infectious diseases, internal medicine, pediatrics, or related field; Advanced scientific degree, such as Master's or Ph.D. in immunology, virology, epidemiology or related field preferred but not required.

Supervisory Responsibilities: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.
