POSITION OVERVIEW AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

IDEX Health & Science is seeking a talented Senior level Design Engineer to join its product development team. IDEX designs, develops, and manufactures OEM fluidic systems and precision components.  IDEX designs and manufactures OEM fluidic systems and precision components which are used in life science and healthcare instruments to improve the quality of life.  The innovations developed at IDEX contribute to the detection of autoimmune disorders and the global biotech revolution aimed at preventing and curing diseases through genetics.

The position’s primary responsibility is the development and optimization of IDEX fluidic product solutions in the Biotech and In Vitro Diagnostics for OEM instrumentation needs. This role works to understand customer application challenges, extract and define product requirements, create specifications, and develop concepts that address customers’ needs. The Senior Design Engineer utilizes mechanical engineering knowledge, problem-solving skills, and project management to drive projects through the product development process – from concept, to design, through validation, and into production scale-up.

The Senior Engineer position is a part of a Research, Development, and Engineering team that is geographically distributed among several sites.  This role will receive guidance for work priorities and have support for challenges and questions. The person filling this role will have high autonomy and must be comfortable with remote communications and be driven and organized with practiced personal accountability.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Ability to take concepts from ideas to functional prototypes for verification testing while documenting research and testing for the development of the intellectual property. 
  • Works with product managers, sales, and customers to define new product requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience of interfacing with external customers and outside suppliers/vendors (at least three years experience)
  • Proven ability to design precision mechanical components and assemblies (highly proficient in GD&T). 
  • Analyzes designs for precision performance with appropriate tolerances and design for manufacture.
  • Ensures release to manufacturing documentation is reviewed, accurate, complete, and contains clear and comprehensive assembly and test instructions.
  • Comfortable leading and managing new product development projects using established procedures and project management tools as well as taking the role of Technical Lead for key customer projects.
  • Supports investigation, analysis and problem solving of quality items.
  • Develops expertise on relevant IDEX Health and Science technologies and products.
  • Investigates and remains current on new technology to generate new product ideas.
  • Capable of succinct communication of technical information with diverse teams – orally, in written form, and via presentations.
  • Attends relevant trade shows and assists in the preparation of product demonstrations and substantiation of marketing claims.
  • Remains flexible to support other functions as needed.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar degree.
  • Proven ability to design precision mechanical components and assemblies
  • Adept at using CAD software (SolidWorks) to create detailed models and drawings.
  • Experience applying mathematical and computational analysis to solve engineering problems, including the use of modeling tools such as FEA, CFD, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete tasks and effectively manage time to meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in the use of business software tools (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint) and a proven ability to quickly learn and use new software tools.
  • An established self-starter with the ability to work independently while supporting a culture of accountability, team orientation, and a focus on successful outcomes.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of various manufacturing processes including precision machining, injection molding, or extrusion.
  • Knowledge of engineering plastics and their applications.
  • Experience in the application of FEA and CFD to engineering problems as well as Design and Process FMEA
  • Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE) techniques preferred
  • Experience with fluid control and electro-mechanical devices (solenoid/rotary valves, pumps, sensors, test equipment).

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

  • General office area, engineering laboratory, and manufacturing facility.  There is the ability to work from home as business needs and projects allow.
  • Able to operate various types of test equipment and tools, perform experiments, build prototypes, and complete work at a desk.
  • Able to travel (<10%) via plane/car/bus/train as required, domestic and international, and be comfortable traveling to locations where customs and cultures are unfamiliar.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds, move within an office complex and outside in the field.
  • Vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus and visual acuity for reading a computer screen and handwritten/typewritten documents, and experiment observation.
  • Communicate via phone, computer and in-person situations.
