HJF is seeking a Research Assistant I to support the Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to MHRP.

Performs research and/or development in collaboration with others for projects. Provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff. Responsible for the maintenance of flow cytometers in the Flow Cytometry Core. Be available to assist other MHRP personnel with operating the cytometers.

NOTE: As a U.S. Government contractor, all HJF employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by December 8, 2021. Proof of vaccination or an approved religious or medical accommodation will be required.

Responsibilities:
  1. Responsible for daily set up of cytometers, evaluation of cytometer performance, troubleshooting and maintenance of cytometers. Liaise with manufacturer to ensure the optimal performance of all instrumentation including coordination of preventative and corrective maintenance as required. (30%)
  2. Performs laboratory assays, including collection and organization of data. Makes detailed observations about experiments. Provides basic data analysis and interpretation, as directed by supervisor. (40%)
  3. Maintains reagent and consumable supplies needed to conduct laboratory operations. Facilitate the necessary administrative and logistic processes to order and receive materials. Ensures general lab chores are completed. (20%)
  4. Performs data entry in accurate, timely and efficient manner. Maintains clear and accurate data collection records, inventories, and logbooks. (10%)
  5. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques; ability to follow detailed instructions; good communication and analytical skills. Experience with flow cytometry is a plus.

Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree in biological sciences required.

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: Minimum of 0-2 years of experience required for this position.

Work Environment: Takes place in conditions that pose risk of exposure to pathogens.

Work Arrangement: 100% on-site.

Background/Security: Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
