The mission of the Biosciences Division is to conduct multidisciplinary research on fundamental biological processes focusing on environmental microbiology, microbial communities and dynamics, and microbial evolution. The Molecular Environmental Science and Biogeochemical Process Group in the Biosciences Division at Argonne National Laboratory focusses its research efforts on developing a mechanistic understanding of coupled hydrologic and biogeochemical processes in aquatic, near surface, and subsurface systems.

We invite you to apply for a postdoctoral appointee position within the Molecular and Environmental Science and Biogeochemical Process Group to work on The Coastal Observations, Mechanisms, and Predictions Across Systems and Scales (COMPASS) project, a new multi- institutional effort supported by the United States Department of Energy with a decadal vision to dramatically enhance predictive understanding of coastal systems, including their response to short- and long-term changes. Research will focus on how the coupled interactions of waters, soils, and plants drive the fluxes and microbial transformations of carbon, nutrients, and redox-active elements across the terrestrial-aquatic interface (TAI) of coastlines. Activities during the two-year pilot study will focus on the Chesapeake Bay and Lake Erie coasts.

We seek persons with expertise in Environmental Microbiology, Environmental Chemistry, Biogeochemistry, or Soil Science and the application of synchrotron-based techniques to problems in one of these areas. Skill in the operation of equipment necessary for these techniques and knowledge of x-ray beam line optics and insertion device and bending magnet beam line setup procedures is preferred but not required. Applicants must have strong communication skills (written and oral) and have the ability to work within an integrated multidisciplinary scientific research group and with scientists with a variety of scientific backgrounds such as microbiology, chemistry, x-ray physics, hydrology, geochemistry, soil science, and computer modeling.

Develops and applies Biogeochemistry and synchrotron-based techniques to study dynamics of biogeochemical mechanisms within coastal systems over time. Develops and applies microcosm-based approaches in the laboratory to test impact of multiple environmental conditions. Participates in experiments at DOE national user synchrotron facilities. Participates in interdisciplinary discussions aimed at the design of new experiments. Reports on results of research including publishing scholarly papers in scientific journals, giving presentations at conferences, meetings, and seminars. Participates in the preparation of reports and proposals required by funding agencies to obtain and continue funding support.

Position Requirements

  • A recent or soon-to-be completed PhD in environmental microbiology, environmental chemistry, biogeochemistry, soil science, physics, or related
  • Knowledge and skills in either Biogeochemistry or synchrotron science, demonstrated work in soil-based systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of biogeochemical processes important in environmental science.
  • Skill conceiving experiments and studies to develop new knowledge in environmental biogeochemistry.
  • Skill developing laboratory procedures and protocols for new experiments designed to test scientific hypotheses.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.
  • Knowledge of potential applications of x-ray techniques to the outstanding problems in environmental science.
  • Skill in diplomatic interactions with others, including individuals having a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Skill working as part of a team.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail required
