Entity and activity description

Air Liquide Large Industries provides our customers with industrial gas and energy solutions that are vital to their own industrial production. We own and operate over 2,000 miles of industrial gas pipelines in the U.S. supplying mainly oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and syngas in large quantities from multiple production sources to major customers in the chemicals, petrochemicals, refining and steel industries. Our pipeline operations and industrial gas production facilities are closely monitored 24/7 within our leading-edge operations control center located in Houston, Texas. Our operations control group monitors over 89,000 data points and assists with product supply and coordination. We are constantly optimizing our supply network to provide high reliability and energy efficiencies allowing Air Liquide to adjust supply needs more quickly and effectively enabling growth to our customers.

Job Summary

The role of the Real Time Operations team is to operationally optimize the product supply, natural gas, and energy portfolios in real-time, while mitigating risk. The team drives daily and short term operational decisions and transactions. Plant and pipeline operations, industrial gas product supply, and cogeneration are closely monitored 24/7 within a leading-edge remote operations control center (ROCC) located in Houston, Texas. The supply network is constantly optimized to provide high reliability and energy efficiencies allowing LI NAM to meet all customers’ supply needs in real-time and to maximize economic performance.

 

The Manager, Onsites ROCC Operations is a member of the LI NAM SIO Center team and reports to the Manager, Real Time Operations. The Onsites Real Time Controllers will report to this position which is located within the SIO Center in Houston, TX.

Responsibilities

Product Supply OnSites:

  • Develops the product supply mid-term operational configuration strategy ensuring reliability of supply to customers, by intelligently balancing supply and demand (LI and Merchant) with efficiency.
  • Drives ROCC controllers’ product supply strategy for implementation in real-time, including technical training, coaching, and creating tools that add value to the supply operation.
  • Develops week ahead and month ahead operational strategy, including turnaround and outage schedules, by collaborating with LI production facilities, maintenance team, commercial team, energy management team & energy market, LEAD center, PI/Airgas and fellow product supply managers.
  • Sets strategy to minimize impacts to customers during abnormal and emergency situations, by collaborating with customers, suppliers, ALLI-NAM management, commercial,  and operational stakeholders.  Communicates effectively with customers’ operations personnel and with suppliers, and energy off-takers during such events.
  • Is on call during abnormal operations and may be part of ROCC ride-out crew during emergency events. Can be consulted outside of normal working hours by ROCC operations, plant operations, commercial and management.

 

Supply Chain Tools:

  • Develops and owns tools for power market optimization for the Onsites locations. Aligning with steam and power forecasts. 
  • Owns, updates, and maintains OPTIM for Onsites locations which is run by ROCC controllers to optimize cost and/or margins where appropriate.
  • Supports the evolution of EMS for the OnSites plants ensuring controller efficiency monitoring of key performance indicators and identification of efficiency improvement opportunities. 

 

Analysis and Strategy:

  • Re-think and develop the strategy in conjunction with plants, PI/Airgas, energy management, commercial, and maintenance operations, to meet reliability and cost efficiency goals in the supply-chain and product supply activities. Develop the appropriate  procedure and controller training needed to successfully execute the strategy.
  • Represents ROCC position in planning over the long term by collaborating with all stakeholder teams to provide an operational perspective and input into new and renewal customer product supply agreements, energy supply/sale contracts, and other long-term decisions related to network operations; utilizes and drives hydraulic modeling when appropriate.
  • Plans and adjusts for energy curtailments/outages. Ensures day-to-day communication with ISO, utilities and partners with regards to energy programs participation, systems adequacy and regulatory compliance. Understands limitations of liquid backup supply  capabilities and ensures operational and customer risk is appropriately mitigated.
  • Analyzes energy markets in conjunction with energy management and adapts energy/ancillary services bidding strategy to optimize revenues and control profit/risk balance.  Informs energy management if operational constraints and/or growth change Air Liquide’s ability to participate in established programs.

 

Controller Management & Development:

  • Create individual development plans for Onsites Controllers, and provide training and coaching to improve performance.
  • Ensures and facilitates emergency coverage for controller events such as illness, fatigue and dispatch rendering controller unable to operate from office environment
  • Identify & assign improvement projects for the Onsites controllers.  Utilize improvement projects for controller development
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree required (Engineering or Business discipline preferred).
  • Minimum 3+ years experience in, and working knowledge of industrial gas operations, liquid dispatch. Familiarity with Canadian energy markets is preferred.
  • A demonstrated ability to accurately manage large quantities of data. The ability to acquire and interpret internal data, making links to operational and margin implications.
  • Able to understand and communicate risks on various time-scales, and drive the associated mitigations.
  • Strong analytical skills and strategic mindset. Desire to develop and maintain a deep understanding of the business strategy, business requirements and incorporate this knowledge into business recommendations and evaluation of risk. 
  • French speaker preferred. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; including the ability to produce high quality documents and perform presentations to customers and internal management. 
  • Ability to work autonomously and with limited oversight.
  • Ability to be on call and can be consulted outside of normal working hours by ROCC operations, plant operations, and management.
  • Good problem solving skills. Comfortable under pressure. 
  • Strong application skills including a high level of knowledge of spreadsheets.. 
  • Ability to manage initiatives and projects from idea generation through to execution and delivery. Strong interpersonal, networking, negotiation and facilitation skills.  Ability to form working alliances with internal customers.
