You'll be developing complex system architectures within contextual modeling platforms, ushering them from operational concept through preliminary and detailed design, simulation, and test using progressive tools. As a cross-functional engineer, you are in charge of system-level ownership of new products and processes through the product lifecycle.

SNC is hiring an Optical Mission Payload (MPL) Responsible Engineer (RE)

As the Optical MPL RE you will perform both systems and project engineering duties as a primary interface for the Mission Payloads IPT to potential suppliers, senior management and customers to conceive, plan, develop, build, test and deliver a new space based optical sensor.

Systems engineering duties include leading a team of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and contributing to translating system level modeling and simulation into sensor performance and functional requirements, surveying the market for candidate payloads, assessing their ability to comply with requirements for the application, obtaining and assessing candidate payload costs, performing cost/benefit analyses and presenting analyses and recommendations to senior management and customers.
Project engineering duties include successful execution of the Optical MPL competition source selection or make/buy decision, and leadership of a supplier management team responsible for oversight of the sensor subcontractor’s project performance including addressing cost, schedule and technical, quality and risk.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Physics, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Engineering Science, or related discipline and typically 10 or more years of relevant experience
  • Ability to contribute to and coordinate the efforts of SMEs to develop, analyze, and review technical system requirements for EO/IR/Optical sensor systems for a space environment, and flow down to subsystem and lower level design requirements
  • Ability to perform sensor-related mission analysis and collaborate and work with subcontractors and partners to evaluate proposed EO/IR/Optical requirements and design with respect to system and mission requirements
  • Knowledge of optics, telescopes and attitude control systems designs relative to development of EO/IR/Optical sensors
  • Experience in concept development, design, and integration and test of EO/IR/Optical sensors on spacecraft

  • Ability to develop physics-based sensor models to be used in high fidelity models and simulations
  • Experience with sensor cueing, data fusion, and tracker algorithms and models, e.g., Kalman filters, as basis for integrating EO/IR/Optical sensor into SIL and HWIL simulations
  • Ability to analyze, design, develop, integrate and test EO/IR/Optical systems/subsystems including optics and telescopes for EO/IR/Optical sensors in space
  • Ability to model hardware and software EO/IR/Optical sensor components for advanced airborne and space applications
  • Ability to develop EO/IR/Optical models and simulations to verify that designs meet requirements and performance metrics in terms of an interoperable System-of-Systems.
  • Knowledge open systems standards, e.g., SOSA, OAM/UCI as applicable to platform integration of EO/IR/Optical sensors
  • Perform architecture development, requirements development, trade studies, and product development in key areas such as: EO/IR/Sensor subsystem requirements, signal processing, sensor payload C2, and sensor resiliency and reliability


This position requires current/active Top Secret with SCI eligibility U.S. Security Clearance. U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance for employment. Non-U.S. Citizens may not be eligible to obtain a security clearance. The Department of Defense Consolidated Adjudications Facility (DoD CAF), a federal government agency, handles the adjudicative aspects of the security clearance eligibility process for industry applicants. Estimated Starting Salary Range: $117,040.88 - $160,931.20

SNC offers annual incentive pay based upon performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
