The Office of Audit Risk & Compliance (OARC) is a dynamic professional environment focused on strategic risk assessment; operational, performance compliance, and control assessments; process and control environment consultation; and proactive engagement in emerging issues discussion with clients and institutional leadership.


The Sponsored Programs Compliance Manager supports the mission and objectives of the Office of Audit, Risk and Compliance through highly engaged support of the Director of Sponsored Programs Assurance and Research Compliance and compliance auditors assigned to the engagements.  The Sponsored Programs Compliance Manager also assists in performing risk assessments, client communication, project planning and execution, engagement leadership, report delivery and follow-up consultation.  Valuable professional attributes include risk-based compliance experience, in-depth knowledge of sponsored programs processes, strong relationship building skills, confident communication style, appropriate assertiveness, diplomacy, personal initiative, and the ability to facilitate collaboration across all levels of the institution.  Work performed includes:


Compliance Assurance Services – 70%

  • Conduct risk-based compliance assurance reviews.   The reviews will include but are not limited to assessments of culture and processes, training, monitoring, response to detected problems, and balancing the regulatory burden, which are key pillars for assessment of compliance effectiveness.
  • Serve as team lead to evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of the process and controls in support of business management objectives.
  • Lead individual projects by performing preliminary planning and creating a risk based compliance program. 
  • Execute with strong project management skills and steer outcomes through leadership on assigned projects and teams.    
  • Supervise assigned projects and review workpapers and reports for adequacy of content and reasonableness of conclusion and recommendations. 
  • Planning, conducting and reporting of engagements in the complex high risk university environment for both internal and external risks.
  • Oversee compliance monitoring activities reporting to management any issues arising from specific monitoring activity.
  • Monitor key performance indicators for sponsored programs objectives and performance expectations.
  • Review industry, trade and regulatory publications for engagement considerations.


Advisory Services – 15%

  • Promote increased risk awareness and the value of business process change and identify opportunities to strengthen the risk mitigation strategy of the university.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the organization’s operational objectives, identify barriers to achieving the objectives and contribute value by offering solutions for more successful execution.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships through collaboration and institutional community involvement and be recognized as a solution-driven, trusted advisor.



Relationships/Personnel – 15%

  • Maintain a strong client service focus by developing productive working relationships and regular communication with key client personnel.
  • Foster a consultative role with management and client personnel.
  • Participate and partner with clients on advisory groups and/or steering committees.
  • Serve as a liaison to the research community for process evaluation and internal control design assessments.
  • Coach and mentor compliance team members to set goals and responsibilities for specific engagements, foster teamwork, facilitate discussions on new ideas and opportunities for adding value to clients.


Technical Expertise

  • Function as the subject matter expert for sponsored research compliance expectations and activities, including ongoing engagement in emerging issues, changing regulatory requirements and changes to Duke policies, procedures and processes.
  • Identify, research and communicate emerging trends and regulations in sponsored research.
  • Perform due diligence to explore potential risks or issues and validate potential implications.
  • Coordinate knowledge sharing amongst the compliance team and foster understanding of university regulatory requirements and solutions.
  • Demonstrate industry knowledge of academic medical center universities and not-for-profit organizations, including governance structures, operating environment, key performance indicators and constituent expectations.
  • Perform other related duties and manage other projects incidental to the work described herein.

Bachelor’s Degree and/or Master’s in accounting, economics, business administration or related field is required; experience auditing or significant experience relevant to the position is strongly preferred.  Industry recognized sponsored research certification or designation will be considered favorably.



Position requires a minimum of seven years relevant sponsored research administration, regulatory compliance, audit or consulting experience.  At least three years’ experience working with higher education industry highly preferred.  Experience working in an academic medical center, college and university or not-for-profit setting desired.



Detail oriented. Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Strong oral and written communication skills as well as relationship management capabilities required.  Ability to meet deadlines and prioritize multiple tasks. Experience with sponsored research management systems (i.e. SPS, SAP, eCRT, Peoplesoft) and electronic workpaper application experience preferred.
