Postdoctoral Associate- Dr. Krauchanka – Surgical Sciences

 

An appealing postdoctoral research opportunity is available in interdisciplinary team that studies geographic and race-specific disparities in morbidity, mortality, survival, and life expectancy across the U .S. The position is opened at the Division of Surgical Sciences, Department of Surgery, Duke University School of Medicine (Durham, NC, USA) in the frame of a recently funded NIH/NIAR01. Our interdisciplinary research team that includes the researchers from the Duke University School of Medicine and the Duke Social Science Research Institute, the Bio demography of Aging Research Unit (BARU), pursues a cutting edge research on clinic-related (early diagnostics, treatment, adherence to treatment, and comorbidities) and non-clinic-related (behavioral, socioeconomic, environ mental, and access to medical care) factors contributing to health disparities in disease risks, mortality, and life expectancy, with specific focus on populations aged 65+.

 

We are looking for open-minded postdoctoral investigators who can work in our interdisciplinary team to apply cross-disciplinary approaches to resolving challenging research questions in areas of patient survival, population health, and combinations of risk factors.

 

The candidates should have completed PhD (or planning to complete PhD within next 6 months) in public health, epidemiology, population health studies, or a related field. Familiarity with the methods of biostatistics, the knowledge in methodology in epidemiology and population health studies, and basic knowledge in statistical software such as SAS are preferable. Experience of working with the ICD-9 andICD-10 codes (including the codes for diagnostic and treatment procedures for surgical, cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, kidney, and neurological diseases) are very welcome.

 

The research agenda will involve analyses of associations between patient survival and mortality and treatment choice and adherence to treatment, the use of effective diagnostic approaches, and comorbidities across the U.S. as well as their effects on geographic disparities in life expectancy in U.S.

The role of access to medical care, socioeconomic characteristics, and behavioral factors is needed to be evaluated both as independent factors and as modifiers of the effects of clinic-related factors. The studies include analyses of the large health related data sets including, but not limited to, the 5% Medicare (including Part D Medicare data files) and 100% Medicare data files, the Health and Retirement Study linked to Medicare (HRS-Medicare), the Multiple Cause of Death data, the U.S. Census Bureau data files, and the Census and the American Community Survey (ACS) data. We expect the postdoctoral fellow will actively participate in analyses of treatment patterns using the procedure codes in Medicare data, run the SAS codes created by the bio statisticians of our team for analysis of geographic and racial disparities, interpret the obtained results and participate in their discussion, and writing research manuscripts based on the study results.
