Occupational Summary

The Duke Global Health Institute seeks a creative, versatile storyteller who will promote the work of the institute across a variety of media. This position serves as the primary content creator for a busy marketing and communications team and is responsible for writing articles about DGHI’s work and people, producing multimedia features (including photography, audio and video), curating content for newsletters, websites and social media, conducting media relations and outreach, and contributing to integrated communications projects in support of DGHI’s strategic goals.

 

 

Work Performed

 

Content creation

Identify, research, report and write news articles and features that convey the impact of DGHI’s research and educational programs.

  • Propose and execute multimedia features that incorporate visuals, audio and/or video to help tell DGHI stories.
  • Create photographs and short audio and video elements to support DGHI stories.
  • Maintain relationships with faculty, staff, students and communicators within DGHI and across campus to identify news and collaborate on communications projects.
  • Monitor journals and research publications to track new research findings from DGHI faculty.
  • Occasional travel, including trips to international locations to document DGHI research and educational projects, may be required.

 

Editorial and social media 

  • Set overall strategy and content calendar for DGHI’s social media channels (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube). Direct a student assistant in creation and scheduling of content. Monitor engagement metrics and propose ideas for campaigns to encourage audience growth and engagement.
  • Oversee student assistant in production of DGHI newsletter distributed to internal audiences; assist with content planning, development and curation for other DGHI publications, including a monthly external newsletter and annual report.
  • Solicit and edit first-person narratives and photography from students and faculty from global field research and training activities. Ensure all communications from fieldwork are consistent with DGHI standards for culturally sensitive and ethical communications.
  • Curate editorial content on DGHI websites; assist DGHI web team in keeping information about DGHI staff and programs up to date on central websites.

 

Marketing and strategic communications 

  • Support DGHI’s overall strategic communications efforts by collaborating with teammates and colleagues on a variety of projects, including planning and execution of special events, marketing of DGHI’s educational programs and development communications.
  • Maintain close contact and collaboration with communicators in Duke schools, institutes and centers. Seek out opportunities to work on mutually beneficial communications projects, such as shared content and co-sponsored activities or programs.
  • Manage special projects, including trainings for faculty, staff and students on aspects of communication.

 

Media relations 

  • Working with director of communications and in concert with the Duke Office of Communications and Duke Health communications, maintain relationships with global health media outlets and reporters and work to promote media coverage of DGHI. Assist reporters in identifying stories and sources within DGHI.
  • Monitor external media coverage of DGHI news and people and promote media stories through DGHI’s website and internal newsletter.
  • Work with Duke University Communications to promote DGHI experts to external media and identify opportunities to write op-ed and commentary pieces. Occasionally assist faculty in authoring op-eds.

 

Required Qualificatins at this Level

Education/Training:

A Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications or a related discipline is required. A degree in a global or public health-related field accompanied by professional communications experience is also acceptable.  

Experience:

Work requires at least 5 years of experience in a communications role with progressive responsibility. The ideal candidate has demonstrated success creating and promoting content for broad, external audiences across multiple media. Experience writing about academic research or health-related topics desirable. S/he will also have an understanding of and enthusiasm for DGHI’s strategic goals and the ability to think creatively about how to use communications to advance the institute’s reputation.

Skills:

  • Outstanding writing, editing and storytelling skills; fluency in photography, audio and/or video editing skills highly desirable.
  • Proven track record of producing strong, accurate content on deadline; ability to manage multiple projects with different deadlines essential.
  • Excels at translating complex information into highly engaging, accessible content; strong news judgement and instincts for a good story absolutely critical.
  • Demonstrated success setting and executing content strategy for a variety of social media platforms.
  • Experience with email marketing, news tracking and managing content through Drupal CMS.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to form and maintain strong relationships with colleagues across campus.
