HJF is seeking a Team Lead (Laboratory) to support the Diagnostics and Countermeasures Branch (DCB) located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to DCB.

The incumbent will perform Serological and Immunological assays/procedures in strict accordance with the laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Policies, Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP), accrediting bodies, and U.S. regulatory agencies to include the CAP, DoD Clinical Laboratory Information Program (CLIP), and the U.S. FDA. He/she will oversee a Team of Med Tech I and II staff, providing training and mentorship in laboratory testing, instrument operations/maintenance and quality best practices. The incumbent will be responsible for assessing their performance in preparing and analyzing samples, operation and maintenance of state-of-the-art instrumentation, and ensuring adherence to all quality control procedures in support of clinical diagnostic and clinical research initiatives.

Responsibilities:
  1. Performs assays for the detection and confirmation of HIV and Hepatitis B in a high throughput laboratory as well as performance of serological assays for other infectious diseases as needed with a high level of expertise and proficiency to train and oversee the activities of Med Tech I and II staff activities as well as make recommendations for process improvements. (40%)
  2. Coordinates and performs the validation of new assays, equipment, and materials as required with the Serology Senior Team Lead and Serology Technical Supervisor. (20%)
  3. Aids the Senior Team Lead and Technical Supervisor in the implementation of new projects and protocols by developing workflows, identifying best safety practices, writing/drafting of SOPs and developing appropriate test report/data capture forms. (10%)
  4. Reviews and verifies sample run data, quality control and ensures all regulatory compliance standards are met following established SOPs. Ensures proper entry of specimen data and testing results into databases or LIS. (10%)
  5. Responsible for Datatron Monitoring system as required including after hours, holidays and weekends. (10%)
  6. Provides updates to Laboratory Leadership on work schedules, staffing needs, staff training and competency, and attends laboratory meetings as required. (10%)
  7. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required trainings and Lab Leadership meetings.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Excellent laboratory and technical skills. Experience working in a high throughput clinical laboratory environment. Experience with HIV diagnostic testing preferred, but not required. Prior experience managing/training a Team performing laboratory testing. Ability to create and edit documents, such as standard operating procedures. Comprehensive and detailed knowledge of accrediting and regulatory agency requirements, federal and state laws, knowledge of laboratory information management and automation, ability to recommend corrective actions and policy changes to correct deficiencies and improve laboratory programs is desirable.

Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree is required.

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: Minimum 6-8 years of relevant work experience required.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: ASCP certifications for one of the following cytology, histology, microbiology, serology-immunology, hematology, clinical chemistry, and/or immunohematology.

Work Environment: Set in a laboratory work environment.

Background/Security: Must have lived in the U.S. 3 out of the past 5 years; eligible to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/ Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
