Position Information: Position Title: Accountant II/III Job Group: Professional & Scientific Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and 2 years of related experience Preferred Qualifications: Experience with governmental accounting and GAAP accounting. Experience with complex accounting systems. Experience working with external auditors. Experience preparing financial statements. Job Description: Summary Performs professional accounting work of a moderately complex nature. Thoroughly understands institutional, state, and federal policies, procedures, and restrictions. Ensures compliance with generally accepted accounting principles in executing, analyzing, verifying, and reporting transactions of a fiscal nature. Advises management regarding the effective use of resources and methods to maximize earnings. Monitors records of past and present operations. May serve as a project leader. Example of Duties â?¢ Provides specialized or general calculations and analysis support in various accounting functions. â?¢ Prepares moderately complex reports, statements, analyses, and interpretation utilizing advanced knowledge and proficiency in accounting practices, principles, and interrelationships for both management and outside agencies. â?¢ Recommends alternatives to management when accounting data indicates trends or situations requiring action to be taken beyond the scope of responsibilities. â?¢ Establishes or revises procedures or operating policies of assigned function. â?¢ Participates in the development and implementation of new or revised accounting systems. â?¢ Reviews accounting and reporting systems, procedures, and completed assignments of other staff to ensure compliance with university or outside agency regulations. â?¢ Reviews and controls accounts and records to ensure accuracy, proper documentation, and compliance with all pertinent procedures and regulations. â?¢ Reviews and adjusts funds or accounts such as cash or federal funds. â?¢ Prepares complex journal entries and records composite entries. â?¢ Adjusts to changing needs of university operations or need to provide specialized or individualized reports. â?¢ Balances complex federal, local or state reports, and tax returns. â?¢ Researches, analyzes, and uses independent judgment in a variety of daily and non-routine decisions affecting assigned function. â?¢ Researches and evaluates new or changed accounting principles and practices. â?¢ Conducts training for campus users. Level Guidelines for Accountant II â?¢ Intermediate-level position with solid professional and/or technical skills working under general supervision to achieve goals â?¢ Applies broad, working knowledge of the principles of the field to moderately complex, difficult, and varied problems and issues â?¢ Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action and resolve problems â?¢ Responds to a broad range of inquiries and requests â?¢ May provide training and/or direction to lower-level staff â?¢ May lead projects of moderate scope and complexity â?¢ Provides guidance to students Level Guidelines for Accountant III â?¢ Senior-level position possessing high-level professional and/or technical skills working independently under minimal supervision to support ISUâ??s mission and department or work unit goals â?¢ Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude â?¢ Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action â?¢ Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices â?¢ Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff â?¢ May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team) â?¢ May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist â?¢ Provides guidance to students This position will be filled as either an Accountant II or III. To qualify for the Accountant III, the candidate must have a Bachelorâ??s degree and 5 years of related experience. The Accountant II is a pay grade PS807. The Accountant III is a pay grade PS808.
