At Applied Materials, our innovations make possible the technology shaping the future.  Applied Materials’ Varian Semiconductor division is searching for an experienced Manager to oversee an Engineering team responsible for mechanical systems and equipment design, function, staffing, technical mentoring as required within the engineering team, professional and personal development of staff, developing and sustaining supervisors/technical leaders for key areas of responsibility, and budget adherence.  Also, this person will technically lead and/or execute engineering projects/programs; lead/participate engineering design reviews, and present at monthly engineering reviews.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensures customer satisfaction via on time delivery of product releases in accordance with predetermined requirements and prompt resolution of significantly complex issues of complex scope.
  • Ensures the integration of engineering resources with cross functional teams to meet product goals of complex scope.
  • Interfaces with internal and external customers regarding significantly complex engineering issues for entire range of products.
  • Reviews product requirements and contributes expertise and judgment throughout the product development processes.
  • Spearheads research and development of new technologies and ensures that newly created processes, designs, and/or methodologies are incorporated within Applied Materials, as appropriate.
  • Ensures that all projects and programs assigned are completed in accordance with predetermined requirements, with specific attention to product/process specifications, project/programs costs, resource utilization, and timeless completion.
  • Establishes operational objectives and assignments, and effectively delegate assignments to subordinate staff.  Responsible for professional development, team building, defining organizational roles, hiring and retention.
  • Impacts the level of service and the team’s ability to meet quality, volume, and timeliness objectives guided by policies and resource requirements within business unit, department or sub-function
  • Applies understanding of the industry and how own area/team contributes to the achievement of objectives


  • In-depth understanding of concepts, theories and Mechanical Engineering principles and basic knowledge of other related job families
  • Experience in leading cross functional teams
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Ability to quickly establish rapport
  • Excels at working as part of a team and collaborating
  • Ability to provide direction, influence, and exercise judgement within procedures and policies
  • Ability to identify and resolve technical, operational and organizational problems while exercising good engineering judgement.
  • Experience working in a global environment preferred


  • Education: Bachelor's Degree or Higher (BS/MS Mechanical)
  • Years of Experience:  7- 10+ Years (MSME versus BSME respectively)
  • Exceptional people management skills: Guides, influences and persuades others internally in related areas or externally. Position requires understanding of Applied Materials global Standards of Business Conduct and compliance with these standards at all times. This includes demonstrating the highest level of ethical conduct reflecting Applied Materials' core values
  • Exceptional project/program management skills: Ability to drive projects and support groups in complex systems.
