Kelly Engineering is recruiting for an Electronics Engineer located in Saint Louis, MO.


The Engineer: Electronic Systems will apply principles of electrical and systems engineering to perform activities in support of the engineering analysis and design of cataract and vitreoretinal ophthalmic surgical equipment and disposables. This person will be a contributing technical member on continual upkeep of existing designs.

Primary activities will include maintaining electronic designs for ophthalmic surgical equipment including component-level engineering to identify alternative components for existing BOM entries that become not recommended for new designs or obsolete ; creating of proper documentation outlining the alternative and substitution / redesign / layout of PC boards to comply with electrical standards as they relate to safety, EMC, and EMI in a medical environment. Activities also include performing electrical and mechanical design testing, performing product functional analysis and root cause analysis, and providing input to the creation of technical documents including technical specifications and design failure modes and effects analysis.


  • Perform lab analysis to determine root cause for issues arising from compliance testing of capital equipment products.
  • Perform lab tests for ESD susceptibility and radiated emission comparisons for potential solutions to compliance concerns.
  • Work with the existing schematic-level designs to generate alternative solutions for components that reach Not Recommended for New Design NRND and Obsolete status.
  • Generate the necessary change request documentation within the change management system to obtain approval to proceed with a design changes.
  • Generate revised schematic and PCB layout changes, as required, to incorporate alternate solutions most design work will be with the OrCAD Allegro design tools, extensive changes may move to Altium design tools .
  • Update / author necessary test plans associated with testing changes and incorporate these plans into the change management system.
  • Create the documentation necessary to pilot release the changes and perform verification activities on the completed assemblies to prove the design changes.
  • Perform BOM scrub using Silicone Expert or equivalent tools in a proactive effort to identify component status changes.
  • Maintain existing electronic product designs, implementing revisions as required to support manufacturing or improve product performance.
  • Work with Operations to ensure the electronic designs are capable of being fabricated on a consistent and repeatable basis.
  • Perform root cause analysis on product defects and generate summary reports of analysis and conclusions. Other duties as assigned.

SCOPE OF POSITION Individual Contributor, working exclusively at the St. Louis site, working within the St. Louis product development group but also working closely with manufacturing.

KEY RELATIONSHIPS Procurement, Manufacturing, Ophthalmic product commercial support, Design Quality.


Required Experience:

  • At least 5 years’ experience in electronic design.
  • Preferred Experience: 5+ years of experience in the electronic design of medical products
  • Preferred Skills/Qualifications: OrCAD / Allegro design tool suite, root cause analysis techniques

Required Education:

  • Bachelor of science degree in Engineering, equivalent experience will be considered.
  • Preferred Education: Advanced technical degree preferred.
