As the company's second line of defense, Corporate Risk — or Independent Risk Management — provides independent oversight of risk-taking activities. Independent Risk Management establishes and maintains Wells Fargo's risk management program and provides oversight, including challenges to and independent assessment of, the frontline's execution of its risk management responsibilities. We manage risk according to the Risk Management Framework and ensure all employees understand their individual accountability for managing risk.

The Consumer Credit team is responsible for leading, developing and implementing strategic initiatives and processes
to drive the company credit culture, appetite, and business performance. Applies subject matter knowledge to serve as a consultant and resource to corporate and/or line of business management regarding credit performance, potential or emerging risks, and business conformity with risk appetite, credit culture, and policies. Creates and analyzes reports. Presents findings to management and provides input into decision-making. Prepares recurring and ad hoc reporting packages for management. Compiles moderate to complex reports to assess and predict risk and monitor performance. Utilizes analytical tools to review and analyze credit trends and recommends appropriate risk mitigation strategies. Works with business partners to provide analytic solutions and develops strategies to support or negate change recommendations. Supports and implements initiatives with low to moderate risk. Internal interaction with team to support risk oversight and monitoring. Limited to no external interaction. Works independently; does not manage other team members.

This job is part of a small team that plays a very large role in the fast-moving payments system in the U.S.  This position will assist a small number of senior risk professionals who oversees the payment processing of medium to very large organizations.  This is an exciting growth area within Wells Fargo and is a wonderful opportunity for a disciplined self-starter with strong writing skills and analytical skills. The ideal candidate will have experience in the payments system and will have knowledge of Visa and MasterCard compliance rules.  
The new team member will participate in the oversight program and due diligence process of our largest customers and he/she will be responsible for accurately reviewing and assessing risks and controls, exhibiting appropriate judgment regarding issue notification, drafting findings and final audit reports, and assisting in communications with Wells Fargo partners.

In short, this will provide oversight of operational risk and compliance programs. Moreover, in this position will be responsible for implementing and monitoring risk-based programs to identify and mitigate any operational risks that arise from inadequate or failed internal processes, controls, staff, systems or external events.
The right candidate will be tracking remediation plans, managing shadow risk management programs and may assist in consulting and support for projects and initiatives to identify and mitigate operational risk in complex business activities. This includes but not limited to: evaluating the adequacy and effectiveness of policies, procedures, processes, initiatives, products and internal controls; identifying operational risk issues; advising management on risk ratings, drafting detailed reports of findings and recommendations, coordinating production of periodic operational risk performance reports for senior management, including trend analysis and recommendations, drafting relevant procedures documents and more.
In this position, the right candidate must:

  • Regulatory or compliance experience in the electronic payments industry
  • Knowledge and understanding of Payment Card Industry (PCI) controls
  • Knowledge and understanding of Mastercard and Visa Products
  • Merchant Acquiring Experience
  • Demonstrate professional skepticism.
  • Manage a number of concurrent projects and remediation plans.
  • Present relevant concerns in professional and unbiased manner.
  • Write opinions reflecting relevant facts that lead to logical conclusions.
  • Escalate significant risks and loss exposures to appropriate levels of management.
  • Review and evaluate risk management practices and develop recommendations to improve operating processes while minimizing the overall risk exposure.
  • Determine if policies, practices, procedures and internal controls (e.g., merchant underwriting, OFAC, AML, BCP) regarding merchant processing are adequate.
  • Perform analysis focusing on minimizing risks to Wells Fargo, through compliance with relevant bank policies, VISA/MasterCard rules and relevant regulations.
  • Initiate/suggest corrective action when policies, practices, procedures or internal controls are deficient or when violations of laws, rules, or regulations are noted.


Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in a risk role demonstrated through work or military experience; or a Master's degree or higher in business or economics

  • Knowledge and understanding of Payment Card Industry (PCI) controls
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently with minimal supervision in a structured environment
  • Ability to deliver results with speed and agility
  • Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, achieve goals, and work under pressure in a dynamic and complex environment
