FIELD RESEARCHER 2 (Field Researcher) Department Description The UC Davis Air Quality Research Center (AQRC) is a growing interdisciplinary Organized Research Unit (ORU). Its mission is to facilitate research on the scientific, engineering, health, social, and economic aspects of gaseous and particulate atmospheric pollutants. The IMPROVE Program at the Air Quality Research Center (AQRC) is seeking a Field Researcher for the field maintenance group. This position requires a range of mechanical and basic electronic skills. The IMPROVE Program measures air quality at approximately 175 sites throughout the United States. The IMPROVE field maintenance team is responsible for maintaining aerosol samplers, and providing technical support to local equipment operators throughout the US. Job Summary Under the direct supervision of group manager and project PIs, provide assistance with air quality monitoring at the field sites, including landfill, dairy, waste water treatment plants, and remote IMPROVE sites. Tasks include calibrating gas analyzers and particle samples in laboratories and shops, preparing field trips to deploy the Mobile Agricultural Air Quality (MAAQ) Laboratory to the field sites, setting-up and operating equipment inside the MAAQ Lab, traveling to IMPROVE site for maintenance, and collecting field experimental data/samples. POSITION INFORMATION Salary Range $20.64 - $42.29/HR No. of Positions 1 Appointment Type Contract, 1 year with the possibility of extension based on funding and continuing need for the position. Percentage of Time Part time, 95% Variable Shift Hours Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm, schedule to be determined PT/FT options. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Lift and maneuver cumbersome and heavy equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. Hike and walk to sites located at high or low elevations. Endure extreme heat and cold weather environments when working at sites. Sit for long periods of time in a car. Climb ladders in exposed locations. WORK ENVIRONMENT Travel to sites all over the country for periods of up to two weeks at a time. Overnight travel required. Valid driver's license to drive up to 5 hours a day while in the field. Restricted vacation during peak periods. Work occasional overtime, evenings/nights, weekends, and holidays as needed, usually on short notice to meet operational needs. Schedule is subject to change with only 24-48 hours notification. This position is subject to the California Department of Motor Vehicles Pull Notice System. QUALIFICATIONS Required : -Academic background in engineering that involves environment, analog circuits, statics, fluid dynamics, engineering physics, and manufacturing processes. -Shop experience processing control and/or instrumentation such as strain gauges, thermocouples, etc. -Knowledge of measurement technology including calibrations, sample collection, and data processing. -Experience in basic mechanical repair shop processes. -Experience with hand and power tools, and basic analog circuitry. -Computer skills using Windows, Word, Excel, email, internet, and online calendaring. -Interpersonal and communication skills to clearly, diplomatically and effectively interact with individuals of varying perspectives and backgrounds. -Skills to research and secure information, resolve problems, and coordinate projects. Preferred : -Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline. -Experience repairing vacuum systems. -Experience providing customer technical support. -Experience operating and maintaining ambient aerosol samplers and gas analyzers. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Background Check This position is a critical position and subject to a background check.
