As a Sr. Advanced R&D engineer/scientist (Mechanical Engineer/Research Scientist), you will work closely with a diverse team of scientists, engineers, and technicians to develop high-performance power generation technologies and other novel systems for remote and autonomous applications. You will contribute to the development of next-generation PEM fuel cell-based power generators and atmospheric water recovery devices. This exciting role includes a mix of analytical work (modeling, mechanical design, data analysis, experimental design) and hands-on in-the-lab work (running experiments, building, testing, and troubleshooting prototype devices). You will manage projects, coordinate across multiple organizations and build deep technical knowledge. You will participate in developing new concepts and writing proposals to government funding agencies to secure project funding. You will work in an agile environment to solve complex problems with speed and creativity. This role reports to the Advanced Alternative Power section within Honeywell Aerospace Advanced Technology.   

Key Responsibilities
  • Mechanical design, convective thermal and mass transfer modeling of an atmospheric water capture device
  • Contribution to the mechanical design and development of next-generation PEM fuel cell power generators
  • Overseeing/running experiments, and building, testing, and troubleshooting prototype devices
  • Data analysis and translation of data into design optimization
  • Developing novel concepts and writing proposals to government funding agencies to secure project funding


  • Master’s Degree in mechanical engineering, physics, chemical engineering
  • 3 years of experience in a R&D environment


  • Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, physics, chemical engineering or related degree program

Technical experience or familiarly with the following:

Mechanical system design using common CAD tools (SolidWorks, Creo, etc.),

Convective heat and mass transfer, including multi-physics modeling/CFD

Quick-turn prototype fabrication techniques

  • Hands-on design, building, debugging, and operating of custom experimental setups
  • Prior experience using industry standard multi-physics modeling tools (COMSOL, ANSYS, MATLAB, etc.)
  • Basic programming skills for data analysis (MATLAB, Python, etc.)
  • Prior experience leading engineering research and development from conception through successful prototyping
  • Basic familiarity with inorganic chemistry
  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop and mentor others
  • Track record of successful contributions to projects or products
  • Prior experience writing proposals and securing external funding
  • Ability to analyze and solve complex and ambiguous problems
  • Creativity and flexibility
