Associate Dean, Residential Education Stanford University Job Number: 89568 Residential Education is recruiting for an Associate Dean who will provide leadership in creating an undergraduate residential experience that fosters diversity, equity and inclusion, health and well-being, belonging and community, and intellectual and personal growth at Stanford. The Associate Dean leads all aspects of Residential Education's efforts in one of the following general areas: undergraduate student support; Resident Fellow engagement; student staff engagement; or house operations. This position will focus on Resident Fellow engagement. In addition, the Associate Dean oversees a subset of Stanford's undergraduate residential community consisting of a total population of 6500+ students (96% of undergraduates for all four years) in 70+ student residences of various types (Resident Fellow-led or student-managed; all-frosh or upperclass; university themes, etc.) grouped into neighborhoods and staffed by 400+ residential student staff. Oversight of the residential experience demands innovative, nuanced, and sophisticated leadership pushing the boundaries of learning in community. This is accomplished through the following: robust staff supervision; direct student engagement; fostering dynamic and responsive relationships with the ~70 faculty and staff Resident Fellows; responsible budget management; astute formulation and interpretation of policy; integrating student learning; creating synergies through partnerships/collaborations across the University community and within each neighborhood; and strategic planning and practical execution of priorities for Residential Education. The Associate Dean reports directly to the Assistant Vice Provost of Residential Education, and is a member of the AVP's Leadership Team. The Associate Dean also collaborates with colleagues across the University and with the professional staff from other departments who work in the neighborhoods they oversee. In this role, you will: Manage the work of managers and other employees, processes, and projects, to implement the strategic goals of Residential Education and Student Affairs. Manage a professional staff team comprised of an Associate Director or Program Coordinator and a Neighborhood Program Director (direct reports), and two Resident Directors and two Community Coordinators (indirect reports). Make hiring decisions, provide coaching and mentoring, and manage performance and staffing levels. Develop and ensure succession planning within area of responsibility. Identify, clarify, and resolve complex issues with university-wide scope and strategic impact and substantial significance which may span multiple areas, using advanced technical and professional knowledge requiring broad discretion and judgment and in-depth knowledge of university policies, governance and priorities. Provide strategic direction for Residential Education in partnership with the Assistant Vice Provost's Leadership Team, and oversee a subset of Stanford's undergraduate residential community, including the associated programs, staff, and forecasting, planning, and managing program budgets. Develop, analyze, measure effectiveness and oversee programs and tools for delivery of student services or programs in Residential Education. Review exceptions to university, Student Affairs, and Residential Education policies and procedures, and settle grievances. Make recommendations that may impact Residential Education and/or the Student Affairs division broadly. Manage the direction of internal administrative policy development for programs and operations. Serve as advisor to the Assistant Vice Provost on programmatic and policy development. Recommend new internal policies, guidelines, and procedures. Manage, interpret, implement, and ensure compliance with university, Student Affairs, and Residential Education administrative, legal, and financial policies and external regulations within department functions/programs and neighborhoods. Recommend new internal policies, guidelines and procedures. Direct process improvement for department functions/programs and neighborhoods. Lead university-wide initiatives and campaigns; develop long range planning and policy development for Residential Education. Direct complex, high-visibility process redesign and innovation projects related to the undergraduate residential experience. Champion major initiatives, develop and drive implementation of project initiatives in the department and in neighborhoods/houses. To be successful in this role, you will bring: Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience. Master's degree and experience in higher education/student affairs setting preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated experience with and deep commitment to providing quality support and guidance to students, faculty, and staff representing diverse identities. Experience with student programming and faculty engagement. Knowledge of student development and community and belonging theory, as well as knowledge of current student interests, culture, and challenges. Ability to inspire students to think creatively and to enable their success. Demonstrated experience implementing university policies related to student organizations and events; experience developing such policies and enforcing them. Ability to establish credibility and collaborate and work effectively with leaders of other offices across a complex university structure to develop an excellent student residential experience. Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management. Strong leadership, organizational, and strategic planning/management skills. Demonstrated experience managing people. Strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information.
