Building Science Specialist – Environmental Services (direct hire)

 

Overview: Kelly Services® is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic individual to join our client’s team as a Building Science Specialist. This is an associate / junior-level direct hire position based in Indianapolis area with a leader in providing environmental services to a wide variety of clients. This role is best suited for a recent graduate with 0-3 years of experience.

 

A Building Science Specialist is responsible for learning and performing various aspects of fieldwork related to asbestos, lead, mold, indoor air quality, and environmental site assessment activities. Work is performed with direction from experienced level technical personnel, under the general supervision of a Senior Manager or Principal.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  • Perform and train field personnel in all field tasks necessary to complete a project’s scope of work.
  • Conduct asbestos-related activities including inspection, abatement oversight, air monitoring, and air clearance sampling.
  • Conduct lead-based paint-related activities including inspections, risk assessments, abatement oversight, dust wipe/air clearance sampling, and report writing.
  • Conduct IAQ (indoor air quality) and microbial-related activities including initial inspections, remediation oversight, and pre/post-remediation air clearance sampling.
  • Manage all aspects of standard projects under the direction of a project or senior manager including budget, estimating/management, scheduling, field activities, data interpretation, client interaction, and preparing a final report and invoicing.
  • Prepare reports documenting building science activities or projects.
  • Identify potential sources of contamination when working on a job site.
  • Identify changes to the scope of work, discuss with August Mack project manager and onsite client, and execute change orders (if necessary).
  • Perform regulatory and technical research as needed to support a project.
  • Evaluate, select, schedule, and manage subcontractors.
  • Communicate with client on projects including closing the sale, explaining the scope and cost of work, presenting the project schedule, informing the client of possible problems, and explaining change orders.
  • Prepare a Health and Safety Plan (HASP) for each project and review and enforce the plan with all persons at the worksite.
  • Document all field activities being performed in a field log including reporting on field techniques, locations of the work, and any relevant field observations.
  • Prepare job descriptions of successfully completed projects and update August Mack resume for marketing purposes.

 

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

 

Entry-level – Requires (1) an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in geology, environmental science, engineering, or a related science field or (2) a high school diploma or equivalency and some construction or labor experience.

 

Experienced – Requires 2 years related work experience and (1) an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in geology, environmental science, engineering, or a related science field or (2) a high school diploma or equivalency. Strong technical written communication skills are a must. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted. OSHA Hazwoper Certification (40 hours) is a plus.

Employee will receive in-house awareness training and obtain applicable licenses and certifications as needed (i.e. Asbestos, Lead, Radon, etc.).

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

This classification requires the use of a company or personal vehicle on company business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license, have an acceptable driving record, and receive a medical clearance from a baseline physical.

This classification requires travel to various client locations. Travel typically involves day trips within the state or neighboring states, resulting in longer workdays; and may include extended and/or further travel, resulting in multiple days and overnights. Long-distance drives and air travel may be required.

This classification has the potential for fluctuating weekend and night work shifts.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

Knowledge of:

  • Building construction and materials.
  • Hazards inherent to the environmental work and related safety measures.

Skill in:

  • Calibrating and using various types of field equipment.
  • Performing mathematical calculations.

Ability to:

  • Learn job-related material primarily through verbal instruction, training, reading, researching, and observation in an on-the-job setting.
  • Document and organize while working on multiple projects.
  • Accurately measure and document distances using a tape measure or other measuring device.
  • Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Work in small, cramped areas.
  • Travel across rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces to access equipment.
  • Climb ladders or steps where equipment is located, to reach objects on shelves, or to monitor machinery and equipment.
  • Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less).
  • Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time to adjust equipment.
  • Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
  • Work closely and support others in a team environment.
