Job Duties Greets and escorts patients to exam rooms; prepares patients for physicians visit by obtaining initial information and vital signs; assists with exams, tests, and special procedures as directed; may be required to draw blood, collect urine, provide wound care and give immunizations and medications under the direction of provider. Checks patients medical records for pertinent data; reviews and maintains current patient information/demographic data, social history, medication record, and pertinent medical history from the patient questionnaire while interviewing the patient in appropriate sections of the record only for the medical assistants level of access. Prepares and organizes module; inspects exam rooms for cleanliness and equipment condition; maintains sample medication closet; stocks and maintains rooms and nurses stations with adequate supplies. Schedule appointments and tests; enters orders in the electronic health record according to orders from and at the direction of provider; pre-certifies patients for insurance coverage for in clinic procedures; sets up referral contacts; reviews all requisitions (labs and x-rays) for completeness. Requests previous medical records and information from appropriate sources; completes requests for confidential transfer of medical records and information. Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Knowledge of medical terminology Interpersonal/human relations skills Attention to details Ability to organize/prioritize work Ability to maintain confidentiality Ability to take patients vital statistics Ability to assist with medical examinations and procedures Ability to operate various office and medical equipment Ability to use an electronic health record application Trained in Medication Administration Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent, in addition to graduation from a recognized Medical Assistant Program; supplemented with one (1) year previous medical experience (an externship at SLU may be substituted for one year experience); current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Current certification or registration as a medical assistant is preferred.
