Sierra Nevada Corporation’s Innovative Solution (iS) Business Unit is utilizing cutting edge open source technologies and frameworks to derive actionable insights from geospatial data. Our cloud deployed (AWS) solution serves critical business needs of Geospatial analysts at the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA).

We are looking for an enthusiastic Dev Ops Engineer that will help operationalize and manage day to day operations of our Cloud based Workflow solution that allows analysts to review and edit geospatial products from Hydrographic offices around the world. The application is hosted on AWS in the UC2S environment and utilizes EC2, S3, SQS, ELB and other cloud based services. As a DevOps engineer your goal will be to help manage the development environment and work towards automation of application deployment and configuration. automate scheduling of jobs, develop scripts that monitor performance and report errors, develop strategies for automatic error recovery at the same time making sure that cloud resources are being optimally utilized. This position requires working with technical leads, data scientists and project managers in a Scrum based Agile environment. This position is based out of the SNC nContext offices in Herndon, Virginia


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience

  • 3 years+ of managing applications within the AWS environment. 

  • Experience with one of the configuration management frameworks viz. Chef, Puppet, Ansible 

  • Scripting language experience (Python, Perl, JavaScript, Bash)

  • Proficient understanding of distributed computing principles

  • Understanding of  Big Data Technologies and the ecosystem viz, Hadoop, Spark, MapReduce

  • Experience with integration of data from multiple data sources

  • Experience managing  NoSQL databases, such as MongoDB, ElasticSearch, HBase

  • Knowledge of various ETL techniques and frameworks with various messaging systems, such as AWS SQS, Kafka or RabbitMQ

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Secret U.S. Security Clearance is required


  • Good knowledge of AWS 

  • Ability to solve any ongoing issues with operating the cluster

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Create, configure, implement, document and maintain ingestion, enrichment and analytic pipelines using Apache Nifi and other custom ETL pipelines 

  • Create, configure and maintain CI/CD pipelines 

  • Identify, evaluate and implement monitoring frameworks required to provide requested capabilities
