  • This is a high-impact, multi-faceted leadership role that will allow you to showcase your skills and expertise as you provide leadership for the governance of projects across the enterprise. You will help to execute and create strategy, drive investment decisions, develop financial analysis, manage budgets, ensure successful organizational change management, establish PMO metrics, oversee the implementation and execution of various projects, analyze and troubleshoot portfolio issues and much more. Additionally, you will focus your efforts on driving and leading the continued transformation from projects based on Waterfall to Agile.
  • Pivotal to your success will be your ability to establish credibility and build relationships and trust with business leaders/executives and a variety of other key contacts throughout the organization. Role Overview

Reporting directly to the Head of Portfolio Management Office, as the Senior Director, Portfolio Management Office

(PMO) you will be charged with providing overall leadership for enterprise wide programs and projects. You will collaborate with executive leadership and stakeholders from both IT and the Business in the areas of prioritization, resourcing, governance, and benefits realization/communication for project portfolios. You will lead a team of approximately 8-15 direct reports that includes Project Managers and Administrators.

To accomplish these objectives, you will lead the evolution of the PMO through the transformation from a traditional enterprise PMO to a Lean Agile Enterprise PMO through implementation of industry best practices, development of tool sets and processes, broadening the scope of programs captured by an Agile PMO, and aligning with other governance related functions and processes across the organization.

Given the current state of AMN's transformation initiatives, you will immediately focus on overseeing the active project portfolio to ensure that program targets (Scope, Timelines, Budgets and Benefits) are met. Additionally, relationship management, team leadership and people development are essential components of this role.

Role Specifics

More specifically, your core job responsibilities and key tasks will be to:
  • Take overall accountability for the development, continuous improvement, and implementation of a strategic Lean PMO organization that partners with key stakeholders within IT and the business to enable effective project delivery
  • Ensure the Lean PMO provides consistent and effective financial and performance control over all initiatives, taking ownership of project outcomes and promptly escalating and managing issue resolution
  • Oversee and lead the evolution and performance excellence of the PMO, toolset, processes, relationships
  • Provide portfolio / project rationalization guidance based on resource constraints (e.g., financial, time, staff, and skills), business goals and initiatives.
  • Monitor and challenge Project Managers, Managers and Directors to continually improve the accuracy of their financial forecasts, program/project milestones/schedules and resource planning based on master program/project schedule.
  • Be responsible for daily leadership and management of the Technology PMO, including governance and enterprise demand management
  • Coordinate and manage the Technology project efforts across all Technology groups
  • Ensure portfolio alignment with AMN Healthcare business and Technology strategies
  • Participating in or leading the prioritization of potential investments using a business value-based governance approach
  • Advise leadership on portfolio risks, prioritization, and resource management
  • Maintain and communicate transparency into project status and performance via executive dashboard and analytic reports, and drive root cause analysis and remediation activity when needed
  • Lead, coach, and motivate a team of project management professionals (Full Time and Consultant) to facilitate their continued growth and development and to ensure the successful delivery of all projects. Provide support to team on resolution of issues/escalations

You will also have responsibility over the Clinical Engagement Board and the Architectural Review Board.

The Ideal Candidate

To be a strong fit for this opportunity you will have:
  • Bachelor's degree with a technical or business discipline or a suitable combination of education and experience.
  • Project Management Methodology (PMP) required
  • Agile/Scrum Master certification required
  • 10+ years' experience leading a technology focused portfolio/program management office
  • Proven success managing a large portfolio with multiple business stakeholders in a fast-paced, transformative, and dynamic environment
  • Organizational change management experience including the ability to help an organization transition to a modern PM function
  • Proven experience with Agile methodology and a background in implementing the methodology across and organization
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills; demonstrated ability to identify risks and issues associated with the project portfolio, program portfolio and project management processes
  • Experience managing a budget of $20-$50 M.
  • Experience facilitating change, including collaboration with executive and senior-level stakeholders
  • Skill at managing interpersonal relations to build rapport inside and outside the immediate project teams
  • Leadership of teams with demonstrated experience in managing operational and capital budgets
  • Strong communications and presentation skills with ability to adjust communication styles depending on type of target audience
  • Experience with different methodologies (i.e. Waterfall, Agile, SCRUM, PMBOK, LEAN, etc.)
  • The ability to utilize human change management techniques to implement business process improvements and automation
  • The ability to develop and implement industry leading processes and reporting through automation and tool sets, and roll out enterprise wide training and support
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and a meticulous approach to project management and planning
  • M&A experience
  • Extensive knowledge of best practices around governance, risk and compliance
  • Expert computer and analytical skills

You should also be willing and able to travel approximately 25 percent of the time.

  • Overseeing the migration of our front- and back-office onto Salesforce and Peoplesoft for allied and nursing
  • Helping manage a number of mergers and acquisitions
  • Facilitating the implementation of a mobile application for clinicians
  • Providing oversight to our data analytics projects
  • Mentoring and coaching the PMs in order to increase their skill sets and ensure projects are managed on-time and on-budget
