Eaton’s Aerospace division is currently seeking a Senior Materials Engineer to join our team. This position is based at our Rumford, RI facility.

Position Overview:

This Senior Materials Engineer role will be responsible for performing a wide variety of testing duties using standard evaluation techniques in the Metallurgical Laboratory to ensure the integrity of Eaton’s products. Responsible for providing technical support and assisting in material evaluation for both Eaton Corporation and outside customers. Functionally responsible for designing, developing, coordinating and deploying work instructions/procedures and associated process controls for special processes. Develops process improvements and cost control programs throughout the plant relative to special processes which includes Heat Treat and Weld. Reviews customer/industry/internal specifications to ensure compliance with stated requirements. Responsible for NADCAP compliance for all special processes and daily operation and compliance of Metallurgical Lab. This person must be able to perform duties with minimum supervision, be highly motivated, and have a broad knowledge of industrial and military specifications.

In this function you will:

+ Apply metallurgical techniques such as weld evaluations, microhardness, grain size, and polishing methods

+ Operate equipment such as optical microscopes, cut-off saws, grinders, polishers, and mounting presses

+ Follow standard safe operating practices and able to safely work/mix acids to etch product

+ Compare test results with given standards to make objective decisions

+ Interpret blueprints and engineering standards

+ Monitor performance of laboratory and production equipment while maintaining accurate inspection records

+ Set-up and maintain current, precise and systematic records for the quality system

+ Oversee metallography lab upkeep - Maintain and troubleshoot equipment in metallography lab, keep lab documentation up to date and in order

+ Specify metallurgical consumable purchases and maintain supplies, enter purchase requisitions for approval

+ Handle calibrations of equipment including outside calibration services of lab equipment

+ Write and modify lab test procedures, train personnel in use/implementation

+ Assisting, conducting and preparing reports for Failure Analyses

+ Define, specify, and implement quality standards and procedures for manufacturing processes relative to special processes

+ Become technical lead and provide technical support for all metallography audits/questions

+ Host Customer and Third Party Auditors as needed.

+ Develop and implement corrective actions including verification activities

+ Ability to use computer software programs (i.e. Microsoft Office) to measure and report results in a clear, efficient manner

+ Communicating both orally and in writing with other departments, cognizant engineers, and individuals outside the organization in a precise, logical, informative, and tactful manner

+ Identify problem areas and recommend corrective actions

+ Participate in group quality improvement efforts and provide technical advice and counsel to cross-functional teams assigned to process improvement projects / problem solving teams / product development teams

+ Studies emerging Metallurgical technologies to keep abreast of industry trends. Works with management to recommend opportunities for technology advancement

+ Performs other duties as assigned by management

+ Required travel time less than 10%

Qualifications

Required (Basic) Qualifications:

+ Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution required.

+ Minimum two (2) years’ experience in Metallurgy or Material Science

+ Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship both now and in the future.

+ This position requires use of information or access to hardware which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. “Green Card Holder”), Political Asylee or Refugee.

+ No relocation benefit is being offered for this position. Only candidates that currently reside within 50 miles of the Rumford, RI facility will be considered. Active Duty Military Service member candidates are exempt from the geographical area limitation.

Preferred Qualifications:

+ Two (2) years’ experience working in a manufacturing environment

+ Working knowledge in aerospace quality processes

+ Working knowledge of drawings and specifications interpretation

+ Advanced Degree in Metallurgy or Materials Science

+ Training in and working knowledge of Special Processing, Controls and Quality Systems (i.e. ISO, Nadcap, AS and FAA)

+ Experience in development, verification, and validation of metallurgical processes

+ Knowledge of mechanical testing and SEM testing

+ Experience writing procedures/interpreting industry standards

+ Proficient in ASTM procedures

+ Be well versed in Industrial and Government Audits.

+ Five (5) years’ experience with metallography/hardness testing procedures and laboratory test equipment

+ Understands Operations and close tolerance manufacturing

+ Excellent communication skills and ability to understand technical issues

+ Passion for alternative solutions

+ Strong team player

Position Criteria:

+ Detailed knowledge of manufacturing processes, and inspection techniques.

+ Ability to manage multiple projects/activities.

+ Detail oriented

+ Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills,

+ Experience in Microsoft computer applications.

+ Must exhibit a high level of motivation, sense of urgency and energetic approach to job duties and requirements.
