Michael Baker International’s Water Group provides innovative consulting, planning and engineering solutions for the entire spectrum of the water cycle. We have proven experience in providing a full range of professional services from scientific and technical analysis, concept through design, and construction support services. Protection and management of water resources starts at the watershed level and follows the movement of water through urban and agricultural areas, streams, lakes and reservoirs, water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, and water/wastewater treatment plants.

Our coastal science and engineering practice consistently provides technically sound, economically viable, and environmentally responsible approaches to address the unique challenges which are characteristic of coastal environments. These approaches reflect a detailed understanding of hydrodynamic, wave, and sediment transport processes, and employ state-of-the-art numerical and physical modeling techniques, coupled with common-sense engineering knowledge. Our engineers have performed coastal engineering analyses in every coastal State in the Country, including the Great Lakes.


The Coastal/Resiliency Project Manager will lead a high performing team that provides clients with multi-disciplinary numerical modeling, and engineering solutions to coastal engineering challenges. The candidate will be integral to growing the business and building a vibrant team in Alexandria.

The candidate who fills this position will be called upon to:

  • Provide technical and project leadership to various national coastal engineering projects involving flood risk, numerical modeling, design, and mapping.

  • Support business development efforts in the Mid-Atlantic.

  • Manage the coastal engineering team.


  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in coastal engineering or related field. Doctoral Degree in Coastal Engineering or related field is preferred.

  • 7+ years’ experience in coastal engineering design, numerical modeling, development of MetOcean design criteria, and FEMA studies related to mapping of coastal flood risk.

  • Excellent computational hydrodynamic and wave modeling skills with experience in software such as ADCIRC, Delft3D, SWAN, FUNWAVE, OpenFOAM.

  • Expertise in Matlab, Python, ArcGIS.

  • Experience running models on HPC systems.

  • Experience leading overland wave modeling and mapping studies with tools such as WHAFIS.

  • Excellent writing and communication skills, time management, ability to multitask and prioritize competing project obligations.

  • Demonstrated history of technical leadership and independent success.

  • Demonstrated history of leading proposal response efforts.
