Position: Maintenance Mechanic

Location: Portland, IN

The pay rate for this position starts at base pay of $19.41 and progresses to $20.79. ($.75 additional per hour for 2nd shift)

Based on education & experience, this position could lead into a Senior Maintenance Mechanic position which starts at base pay of $24.96.

While reporting to the plant engineer, you will be responsible for maintaining plant equipment to provide high quality, efficient, timely shipment of Sonoco products.  Excellent attendance is crucial for the team to achieve success. You must have a proven record of success in a fast-paced environment.  You must have the ability to work with various teams and have a good eye to spot concerns related to production.  You will take pride in your personal hands-on and analytical abilities, organizational skills and attention to detail.

We are looking for detail oriented individuals with prior manufacturing experience.

Day to day responsibilities include:

  • Above all Safety is #1 priority
  • Collaborating closely with other departments and teams
  • Having a high regard to 5S
  • Having the ability to think on your feet and troubleshoot problems and situations
  • Maintain boilers, compressors, heaters, furnaces and hydraulic units (plant equipment)
  • Repair regulators, control valves, pre-expanders, bead tumblers, water/steam valves
  • Performs simple repairs on lift trucks, routine welding and burning with gas and electric
  • Performs daily routine maintenance/inspections (PM) as required according to quality standards
  • Advises plant engineer of supply needs
  • Assists in developing and installing new molding techniques and equipment
  • Can safely operate lift trucks
  • Maintains a safe, clean and organized work area
  • Perform all duties in a manner that demonstrates the highest level of quality and safety
  • Helping out other departments as needed

  • We expect you to be Sonoco mission driven
  • High school diploma or equivalent, preferred,
  • Manufacturing experience, preferred
  • Must be a certified lift truck driver
  • Basic knowledge of equipment and the molding/expansion process preferred along with hydraulics, pneumatics, steam systems, maintenance programs, etc.
  • You have to have a “get it done” attitude and an urgency to resolve problems/tasks
  • To succeed in this role you will need excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Working independently and managing multiple tasks simultaneously is needed
  • Being reliable, having good initiative, being committed, and being quality focused is a must
  • You will need to be able to push, pull, lift and/or carry up to 50 lbs. as needed
  • Having the ability to effectively work with a team in a fast-paced environment is crucial to success
  • You will need to have the ability to read and understand manufacturing instructions
  • You will need to able to perform repetitive duties, including standing for long periods of time and bending, stooping & grasping
  • You will need to have the ability to work quickly while maintaining a high level of attention to detail
