Medicines Development (MD) Information and Digital Solutions (IDS) serves as a strategic function within Lilly Research and Development. There are tremendous opportunities in MD IDS as we continue investing in the transformation associated with speeding drug development and achieving the goal of Digital Development for Lilly! This transformation includes embracing agility, information, user experience, analytics, process automation, and cybersecurity in the drug R&D enterprise.

In order to inject awareness and a sense of urgency into the organization, build a balanced environment of people and technology, and achieve business outcomes from insights generation, MD IDS has established a strategic Digital Capabilities team. This team champions the understanding and application of sophisticated automation and analytics technical capabilities for the generation of human-first and machine-first insights that deliver efficiency and groundbreaking business impact for pharmaceutical development at Lilly.

We have an immediate need for a motivated individual to serve as MD IDS Insights Architect. Are you passionate about influencing and delivering technical software and data architectures, defining machine learning approaches and models, building re-usable code accelerators, and maintaining a knowledge base of best practices? This role will influence the maturation and adoption of advanced automation and analytics capabilities within MD IDS while establishing the strategic direction of insights generation for improving productivity and driving business transformation.

Key Objectives and Responsibilities

  • Build effective relationships with business areas, strategic vendors, and key delivery partners inside and outside of MD IDS such as the Advanced Analytics and Data Sciences (AADS) group, to share expertise and seek opportunities to reuse internal processes and services, so we can streamline implementation and support of key systems
  • Gain and demonstrate understanding and knowledge of how MD IDS strategies, platforms, and technologies enable business process execution, and appropriately challenge the status quo to drive innovative business and IDS collaboration
  • Demonstrate advanced business and systems analysis skills to identify key business needs, utilize external knowledge to proactively evaluate changes in the environment, and partner in the design and development of re-usable software and data products for downstream analysis and insights generation
  • Advise team members, management, and business SMEs to influence business strategy, define architecture, and deliver valuable solutions
  • Utilize business and technical skills via impact analysis and estimated business value to evaluate proposed project ideas, software designs, and/or technology changes (including vendor solutions) to drive business value outcomes and influence management decision-making
  • Propose new ways of approaching business solutions with emerging technologies; prototype new ways of applying technologies to solve business problems; educate others so that they can demonstrate the new ways of achieving the desired outcomes
  • Engage directly with our MD IDS and business personnel to solicit functional and strategic requirements and deliver solutions that meet their needs
  • Play the product owner role, documenting and prioritizing user stories, and effectively collaborating with software vendors, developers and testers in agile teams to create high quality products
  • Drive team to understand and evaluate the existing and potential items in the portfolio of work to align with business priorities and influence the execution of MD IDS projects in collaboration with vendors, business partners, team and management
  • Educate the MD IDS organization in advanced automation and analytics technologies and agile delivery best practices, including MLOps
  • Champion IT service automation by exhibiting deep expertise in DevOps toolchain utilization and the use of cloud build/deploy pipelines
  • Grow utilization and expertise level in tools and processes supporting requirements management, code management, change management, and quality practices governing key work
  • Ensure proper technical requirements have been appropriately defined for each project and are consistent with local and global requirements and standards
  • Use deep system testing knowledge to ensure system testing methods are appropriate, coordinated and comprehensive to decrease probability of unexpected system issues and optimize system use for maximum business benefit
  • Own and drive succinct technical and business process-focused communications with software vendors that are understandable and complete to achieve business and project objectives
  • Provide direction, support, coordination, and leadership to project support and implementation teams to ensure on-time project delivery
  • Analyze and communicate project status and product roadmaps to multiple audiences, including all levels of management
  • Anticipate, understand, and communicate implications of technical decisions on the business, applications, and project timelines
  • May define, lead, and execute technical work; may perform and support programming, software integration, and data integration activities
  • Analyze and solve complex technical problems, including advanced data analysis and multiple technologies

Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field
  • 5 years of experience with the software development life cycle spanning project initiation, design, development, testing, deployment, support and retirement
  • 3+ year of machine learning development experience
  • 1+ years of experience with cloud native engineering, AWS preferred

  • Shown in-depth technical knowledge and experience in technologies such as Unix, Oracle, PL/SQL, Windows O/S, COTS configured systems and reporting solutions with previous development and testing experience
  • Effective learning agility and software technology practitioner in a number of modern technologies (e.g., Spark, NoSQL, ML/AI, IoT, Python, R, mobility).
  • Experience leading teams or in formal leadership roles
  • Shown partnership skills; work with team dynamic strengths and different viewpoints
  • Applied persuasion skills; utilizes experience and knowledge to persuade others in reaching sound decisions
  • Demonstrated application of agile methodology to planning and executing the design, development/configuration and implementation of technology solutions, including vendor solutions.
  • Experience as a product owner for an agile software development team
