The Day Camp Coordinator (DCC) provides administrative leadership for day camp counselors and campers and is responsible for ensuring that Day Camp runs safely. The DCC must lead drop off and pick up each day (including sign in and out sheets), must be present for each Round Up in which Day Camp participates, and should also float during cabin activities to assist overnight staff with the needs of Day Campers. Develop and coordinate day camp activities during cabin-time, lunch, siesta, etc. Set goals with day camp counselors and foster teamwork to achieve goals. Facilitate staff meetings to share ideas, delegate tasks, and ensure clear communication within unit. Responsible for ensuring that all unit members are accounted for during scheduled unit times. Provide regular feedback to day camp counselors and senior administrative staff. Participate in general planning of camp program. Assist with all camp program activities and other camp-wide activities as assigned. Interpret safety and health regulations. Participate in staff meetings and training events as scheduled. DCC is also responsible for administrative duties including cabin assignments, parent communications, recording daily Choice/Challenge sign ups, and photocopying schedules and rosters each week. Required Qualifications: Two years of C.I.T. training or equivalent experience working with children. Must have at least one program skill suitable for camp leadership. Emotional maturity, good health, and vitality. Ability to work cooperatively with campers and other staff members. Willingness to learn Must be at least 18 years old to comply with the NYS Department of Health regulations. Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position. Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and weekends, as appropriate. Preferred Qualifications: * One year of college (30+ credit hours) and coursework in education, physical education, outdoor recreation, youth development, or related fields. * One or more years of experience as a camp counselor. * First Aid/CPR certification. Responsibilities/Essential Functions: Program Responsibilities: Program Assessment - 5% Regularly observe and evaluate day camp staff and provide constructive feedback. Program Development- 5% Develop special day camp activities or events. Program Delivery - 10% Support all-camp Turtle Games; serve as member of Turtle games committee Program Evaluation - 5% Evaluate and provide effective feedback to counselors with the goal of improving their performance. Support evaluation processes for camper satisfaction. Prepare final program evaluation reports with future recommendations Administrative Responsibilities: Direction - 5% Set goals with day camp counselors during orientation. Management - 25% Enforce camp rules with campers by consistently adhering to procedures. Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities and daily routines. Actively supervise the daily routines of lunch, camper hygiene and rest. Recognize and respond to problems as they arise. Mentor junior and senior counselors. Provide staff with immediate, appropriate and constructive feedback. Be alert and monitor campers' needs. Discuss camper needs/ health problems with Assistant Directors and/or parents, as appropriate. Work with and support counselors to ensure a cohesive camping environment that serves and respects all members of the camp community. Facilitate meetings to share ideas, delegate tasks, and ensure clear communication. Set a good example and role model by demonstrating respect, cleanliness, punctuality, cooperation, caring, sportsmanship, manners and healthy habits. Show enthusiasm and encourage campers to get involved in all camp activities. Maintain good public relations with parents and community members. Manage developmental needs of youngest campers by making suggestions for any modifications that may be needed. Coordination/Operation - 40% Instruct campers on emergency procedures. Take attendance frequently and report any campers not accounted for. Report hazards, unsafe conditions, equipment and/or facilities to the Facilities Manager or Camp Director. Report all illnesses and injuries to the Health Director and assist in preparing required records. Document incidents and concerns as needed. Establish rapport and positive connections with counselors, parents and campers that is conducive to a positive, structured, respectful and nurturing environment. Communicate clearly with Day Camp Counselors in regards to expectations, behaviors and issues. Facilitate problem solving through active listening, guidance, and conflict mediation. Assist with personal and/or health problems. Coordinate and supervise daily camper drop off and pick up. Maintain accurate and complete daily roster of attendance and parent/guardian checkout. Answer parent questions and respond promptly to parental concerns. Complete reports and maintain accurate records as directed. Prepare for and actively participate in staff training and meetings. Assist with staff training during pre-service orientation. Work as a team towards goals set at orientation throughout the summer. Assist with planning and implementation of Turtle Games. Attend to developmental needs of youngest campers by escorting and observing them in program activities. Communicate special needs, health updates, late arrivals and early departures of day campers to counselors, office staff and gate attendants. Communicate regularly with Assistant Directors and Program Directors to identify areas of concern and possible solutions. Coordinate special day camp activities or events. Professional Improvement - 5% Prepare for and actively participate in staff training and meetings. Participate in staff evaluation processes as instructed. Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned. Health and Safety - Applied to all duties and functions.
