R&D Engineer II, Design

Pall Corporation has a phenomenal career opportunity to join our R&D team supporting our high growth business unit at Pall Biotech’s Centre of Excellence in Westborough, MA.

This role is perfect for a mechanical engineer or biomedical engineer who is collaborative, has an interest in generating novel technology, new product development and is keen to help create new products that will directly impact how life saving medicines such as vaccines, gene therapy, recombinant proteins and monoclonal antibodies are manufactured.

This position will collaborate with multi-disciplinary team members to design, develop, and commercialize innovative single use and hardware bioprocessing equipment. Some of the assignments typically associated with the work are generating new product concepts, building and testing of prototypes, and working with Pall’s world-class Scientists to develop test methods using process fluids that are similar to those used by our pharmaceutical customers. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to make significant contributions to the future of biologics manufacturing processes.

Your Role:

•Assume engineering design authority for internal or external (outsourced) development activities by collaborating with Pall associates or third-party vendors that may be located on different continents.

•Ensures that product performance meets all specified requirements including regulatory (UL, ROHS, CE, USP VI, etc.).

•Design and develop single-use, consumable products and associated hardware systems for biopharmaceutical manufacturing processes.

•Create CAD models and detailed drawings of new products (Single-use assemblies, Hardware systems, Mixing devices, Storage tanks, etc.).

•Drive good aesthetic and ergonomic designs.

•Assess the technical feasibility of concept designs through building and testing of prototypes or theoretical calculations and/or simulations. Writes test protocols to verify or evaluate design performance. Generates reports and presentations related to design activities.

•Documentation of engineering drawings, technical reports, and revision history, etc. using PLM (ECO, ECR) (follow good drafting standards, geometric tolerances, etc.). Presentation of design concepts to Marketing, Sales, Engineering through sketches, renderings, models, controlled drawings and reports.

•Use tolerance analysis and stress calculations for design analysis.

•Provide timely technical updates and project summaries to R&D management and other key partners.

•Travel to vendor and customer sites for FAT/SAT support as projects require, but typically averaging 10% or less.

•Helps develop project plans, stage gate deliverables, conducts design reviews, and anticipates project road blocks, delays and risks.

Basic Qualifications

•Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering field.

•Minimum three years of experience as design or mechanical engineer in a new product development environment.

•Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling. Experience with design of complex assemblies (Sheet metal, plastic, electromechanical systems).

•Experience working with external vendors (subcontractors) such as mechanical fabricators, material suppliers, etc.

•Working knowledge of common and specialty engineering materials.

•Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project).

Preferred Qualifications

•Master’s degree in Engineering or related field.

•Five plus years’ experience as design or mechanical engineer in a new product development environment.

•Experience operating injection molding equipment (injection molding machine and ancillary equipment).

•Experience designing plastic components for various manufacturing processes.

•Experience with design and development of bioprocessing or food processing equipment.

•Knowledge and understanding of the current industry guidelines for designing, manufacturing, testing and documenting biopharmaceutical process equipment. (USP, ISO, ASME, BPE, etc.)

•Experience in design and development of electronics and controls for electromechanical systems.

•Basic knowledge or experience with software development.

•Experience in qualification activities (FAT/SAT) for process equipment in the biopharmaceutical industry.
