**Description:** This position is for a System Safety Engineer to support the SQQ\-89 Program at our Manassas, VA facility\. The System Safety Engineer is responsible for supporting the lead Safety Engineer in conducting the System Safety Program that addresses both software and hardware safety throughout the program life cycle\. In this role, the System Safety Engineer will also support the broader SQQ\-89 Systems Engineering team\.

The System Safety Engineer actively participates in the System Safety Working Group and regularly communicates with the customer Safety representatives\. The System Safety Engineer must be highly proactive, working in a team environment and interfacing daily with software, hardware and systems engineers\.

The primary responsibilities include:

• Supporting the software and hardware safety efforts, with a focus on identifying safety features and controls for mitigation/elimination of hazards

• Performing risk assessment and mitigation for all identified safety mishaps and hazards, reporting on risk assessment and mitigation at design reviews

• Performing safety review of bugs, problem reports, deviations/waivers, and interface changes

• Developing software and hardware safety requirements, and ensuring safety requirements are verified during integration and test

• Completing MIL\-STD\-882E System Safety hazard analyses, clearly documenting all results for delivery

**Basic Qualifications:**

• Experience performing Safety Hazard Analyses, including Functional Hazard Analysis

• Experience with MIL\-STD\-882 or similar Safety programs

• Experience in requirements management spanning development, definition, analysis and verification

• Experience with SE processes in all phases of the development lifecycle

• Customer interfacing skills to deliver appropriate messages and work through issue resolution

**Desired Skills:**

• Experience with Safety and SE involvement throughout an Agile development process

• Experience in detailed software and hardware design/development programs

• Experience supporting System Safety Working Groups and interfacing with the customer/Principle for Safety

• Experience preparing system safety documentation and presenting safety results/conclusions to safety certification boards

• US Navy Undersea Warfare experience, including sonar, sensors, weapon control

Bachelors degree from an accredited college in a related discipline, or equivalent experience/combined education, with 5 years of professional experience; or 3 years of professional experience with a related Masters degree\.
