JOB SUMMARY
The Clinical Dietitian II is an experienced clinician functioning at the requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND). Clinical Dietitian II participates in departmental and quality improvement projects for inpatient or outpatient departments. Clinical Dietitian II mentors entry level clinicians, students, interns and other departmental employees.

The Clinical Dietitian II works closely with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to provide inpatient/outpatient care that is integrated and compatible with the patient focused goals and objectives. Primary responsibilities include application of the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) including the completion of the nutrition assessment, determination of the nutrition diagnosis, developing and implementing nutrition intervention(s) and monitoring and evaluating of the patient's progress.

This position exists to ensure:
Optimal medical nutrition therapy in assigned service line (bariatrics, medical weight management, outpatient diabetes education, medical nutrition therapy) through:
Individualized screening and nutritional assessment
Development and implementation of medical nutrition therapy care plans
Nutrition education
Monitoring through reassessment of response to nutrition care:
Development of transitional feeding plan if indicated
Termination of nutrition intervention when clinically appropriate
Positive impact on quality and cost outcomes by assuring optimal medical nutrition therapy to minimize potential complications related to alterations of nutrition status.

    4. Develops or updates guidelines, policies, procedures & standards of care services based upon outcomes and evidence based medicine / research(EF)

Nutrition care for assigned service line (bariatrics, medical weight management, inpatient/outpatient diabetes education, medical nutrition therapy)
Screening, assessment, reassessment and medical nutrition therapy
Assesses nutritional status of patients identified at nutritional risk by evaluating: (EF)
Age, gender, diagnoses, past medical & surgical history, drug-nutrient interactions, food allergies, cultural / religious food preferences, etc.
Individualized nutritional needs
Metabolic measurements (MedGem, Body composition)
Biochemical / microbiological indices
Diet history
Medications
Alterations of nutrient digestion, absorption or metabolism
Socioeconomic status
Medical nutrition therapy for assigned service line (bariatrics, medical weight management, inpatient/outpatient diabetes education, medical nutrition therapy)
Develops and implement medical nutrition therapy care plan(EF)
Ensures safe, cost-effective & appropriate medical nutrition therapy
Recommends and / or implements appropriate nutrition care(EF)
Nutrition education
Educates patient, caregiver, interdisciplinary team and / or intradepartmental team on nutrition information(EF)
  1. Collaborates with patients, caregivers and health care team members
Assesses effectiveness of nutrition education(EF)
Monitoring and reassessment
Evaluates response to nutrition care for patients identified at nutritional risk(EF)
Evaluates clinical effectiveness and progress of nutrition care(EF)
Facilitates communication of medical nutrition therapy care plan to assure continuity of care between patient care units(EF)
Develops transitional feeding plan if indicated(EF)
Recommends evaluation by adjunctive services (social services, speech pathology, immediate referral to RN re: pain assessment, etc.) as indicated(EF)
Terminates nutrition intervention when clinically appropriate(EF)

  3. Communicates regular updates to clinic manager
Participate in multidisciplinary meetings for service line assigned. (EF)

Qualifications:

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Baccalaureate degree in dietetics, food science, nutrition, institutional management or relevant field from an accredited university
Master degree in dietetics, food science, nutrition, institutional management or relevant field or a Specialty board certification (e.g. Certified Diabetes Educator, Certified Specialist Renal, Certified Nutrition Support Clinician. etc.) [Exceptions: grand-fathered staff already in position]
Completion of dietetic internship accredited by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
5 years clinical nutrition experience with a minimum of 2 years hospital experience

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED
Registered dietitian certified by Commission on Dietetic Registration the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
Current license by Texas State Board of Examiners of Dietitians
Completes at least 6 ADA continuing education hours per year

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
  • Knowledge of computer, printer and calculator
  • Ability to interact and effectively communicate verbally and in written format with personnel at all organizational levels
  • Full competency in computer applications
  • Microsoft Office applications
  • Hospital information system applications
  • Minimum typing skills of 50 WP
  • Full competency / skills in verbal and written communication
  • Competency in technical writing and business writing
  • Follow standards of appearance for Clinical Nutrition Services' non-uniformed employee

  • Must self-initiate outcomes management projects to demonstrate impact of nutrition intervention on outcomes
