JOB FUNCTIONS 
  • Demonstrates clinical competence to practice within Central Sterile’s Scope of Care.
  • Directly responsible for the SPD staff functions on a daily basis. Ensures staffing in each area of SPD to support case flow and room turnover. Monitors individual performance and sets goals for staff development.  Acts as a resource and clinical role model to staff
  • Leads quality improvement efforts to include data collection and PI implementation; reviews and interprets data and takes action as needed. 
  • Monitors OR schedule in advance to plan for needed/requested instruments/instrumentation and takes appropriate action to ensure needs are met for cases.
  • Coordinates an instrumentation maintenance and replacement program to ensure availability of needed instruments.
  • Directly responsible for the functions of the resource technician in preparation and completion of all case carts in a timely manner.
  • Arranges emergency and preventative maintenance on equipment and instruments and communicates updates to appropriate staff.
  • Works closely with OR Specialty Coordinators maintaining trays, equipment, and storage of instruments.
  • Manages instrument inventory and the inventory/count sheets.  Assists in developing instrument sets.
  • Maintains a good working knowledge of the tools and techniques to correctly process each instrument to ensure sterility and proper functioning.
  • Responsible to ensure protocols are followed in operating all sterilization equipment, including testing.
  • Ensures hospital and unit-specific policies and standards are followed. Responsible to develop policies and protocols for the sterile processing department, with periodic review.
  • Works with the O.R. Educator and SPD QA Educator on new hire orientation and training, as well as staff competency. Provides opportunities for employee development.
  • Contributes to achievement of the unit, department, and hospital’s goals and mission.
  • Communicates effectively with staff, peers, Surgical Director, external and internal customer.
  • Maintains unit readiness for regulatory surveys.
  • Assumes accountability for decisions and actions.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures, supports the mission of the hospital
  • Reads, understands and complies with all established hospital and department policies and procedures.
  • Works closely with OR, ED, OB and all other departments concerning instrument trays and items brought to them for processing.
  • Orders needed supplies from Supply Chain and outside vendors.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and storage of biological test records and sterility logs.
  • Oversees department schedules and approves time off ensuring that department is adequately covered.
  • Cleans, prepares and sterilizes instrument trays according to procedure cards.
  • Responsible for proper cleaning and operation of the Steam and Sterrad Autoclaves, Sonic Cleaner.
  • Responsible for mechanical, chemical and biological testing of all autoclaves, as established by the department policies and procedures.
  • Uses hospital supplies and equipment efficiently.
  • Follows established policies and procedures of the department.
  • Is familiar with and complies with the hospital infection control, emergency, fire and disaster plans.
  • Knows the functions, use, maintenance and safety precautions of the department equipment.
  • Maintains a high level job knowledge by attending appropriate seminars and inservice programs relating to duties and responsibilities.
  • Maintains a neat, clean appearance and conforms to established dress code.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

 

Education:      Minimum of Associates degree in related field.  Bachelors in related field preferred. 

Certification:   Certified Sterile Processing Technician (CSPDT) from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (formerly NICHSPDP) OR CRCST from IAHCSMM.

Experience:     Minimum five years sterile processing experience with at least 2 years of in a leadership position.
