The Job

The User Interface (UI) Designer is responsible for creative execution of concepts and designs for Ace's consumer facing website, acehardware.com. This position will execute designs to be visually compelling, on brand and intuitive to seamlessly enable the user to achieve their objective. The UI designer will work closely with the UX team, developers and IT to ensure acehardware.com delivers on Ace's helpful brand promise.

Creates innovative, useful and usable solutions for acehardware.com:
  • Collaborates with the UX designer and/or director, business stakeholders and developers to create the visual designs for new user experiences.
  • Designs for all device screen sizes, taking into account mobile, desktop and tablet user when making design decisions
  • Executes all visual design stages from concept to final hand-off to developers, including UI documentation and prototyping.
  • Implements and maintains the acehardware.com Design System.
  • Ensures the Ace brand standards are incorporated into all design work.
  • Collaborates with the Creative Director to understand the Ace Brand standards
  • Demonstrates the ability to make suggestions pertaining to the identification of critical elements and alternatives to implement the most appropriate visual design solution supporting the user experience direction.

Ability work on multiple projects in varying in size and complexity, with support from the UX Director or designer assigned to the project.
  • Manages, prioritizes and determines UI visual design activities for assigned projects.
  • Establishes priorities for assigned tasks and coordinates phases of work with others.
  • Demonstrates strong organization skills.
  • Actively seeks out feedback from other UI Designers, UX Designers and UX Director on visual design concepts and deliverables to ensure the best UX direction is created.
  • Applies broad knowledge of workflows, digital asset management, problem solving, designing and quality control to handle assigned projects with minimal supervision.
  • Performs design discover actives including but not limited to, competitive analysis, UI trends and user testing.
  • Stays up to date on UI trends and best practices.

What you need to succeed

Experience and Technical Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years experience in graphic design, digital design, or other related experience in corporate or agency setting.
  • Location: Oakbrook, IL - Hybrid model (not fully remote position)
  • Bachelor's degree in discipline related to functional digital design work preferred.
  • Ability to problem solve by analyzing variables and applying appropriate solutions learned through experience and proficiency in understanding the job. Must be able to recognize anomalies and critical situations and respond appropriately. Must be able to communicate and interact with a variety of internal/external customers and/or co-workers at level of detail required to resolve issues of moderate complexity.
  • Must have knowledge and experience working on ecommerce websites and demonstrate strong UI visual design skills and portfolio.
  • Experience working in an agile development process.
  • Requires very good communication skills with ability to state messages in a clear manner by using language that is easy for others to understand.
  • Must be able to proactively listen to others to understand issues and situations.
  • Must be able to clearly articulate business needs to both internal and external customers.
  • Must be very well versed on Macintosh platform (OSX) and industry standard applications: Figma (preferred), Sketch, Illustrator and Photoshop; with a working knowledge of Office applications: PowerPoint, Word and Excel.
  • Positive, motivated, collaborative team player. Strong listening skills.
  • Must have excellent prioritizing and organizational skills with great attention to detail.
