Job Responsibilities

Located in Branchburg, NJ

The Project Controls Department’s mission is data gathering, data management, and use of analytical processes to predict, understand and constructively influence the time and cost outcomes of projects or programs through the communication of information in formats that assist effective management and decision making. The Project Controls Department Director leads a department of project controllers, planners/schedulers, cost estimators, risk managers, change coordinators and document controllers responsible for controlling capital projects related to ALAM’s specialty chemical manufacturing technology and plants across the world.  The successful candidate will provide functional management leadership, technical expertise, direction, organization, and guidance to a team of engineers to ensure that high quality project controls support is provided and that performance targets are met. 

The Project Controls Department Director must exhibit a high level of visible, felt safety leadership at all times, demonstrating in words and actions that safety is their top priority both personally and professionally.  This role will leverage multidisciplinary input from multiple stakeholders in order to ensure timely, efficient, high quality delivery of  first- and second-of-a-kind chemical plants and plant improvements within and outside of the normal structured project execution paradigms.  This individual must be recognized as an expert and a highly skilled influencer within the organization.  The position requires a high level of organizational skills, careful attention to detail, and disciplined thought and actions.  Key customers are Senior Management, Project Development, Project Execution and Product Management.  This position is based in Branchburg, NJ and reports to the Vice President of Engineering.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Creates an organizational culture of safety, quality, innovation, discipline, and detail orientation
  • Manages a Project Controls department responsible for providing project controls services to projects related to manufacturing ultra high-purity materials supplied to the semiconductor and photovoltaic industries.
  • Provides vision, leadership, and direction. 
  • Provides overall project cost, schedule, estimating,  progress measurement, and change management leadership and expertise
  • Develops, tracks, reports, and continuously improves key performance indicators.
  • Is accountable for the performance and results of capital projects.
  • Develops, implements, and improves departmental work processes and procedures to ensure best practices are captured and followed.
  • Provides ongoing project cost and schedule analysis, reporting, forecasting, budgeting and change management to project execution teams
  • Sets departmental vision and short- and long-term goals.  Monitors progress against goals and ensures that they are met.
  • Mentors and trains project managers, project controllers, and department managers.
  • Recruits and retains talented individuals.
Additional Job Responsibilities
  • Leads and participates in quality/safety investigations, and risk evaluations. Owns and executes assigned quality and safety corrective and preventive actions.
  • Builds robust project management systems.
  • Drives continuous improvement in safety, reliability, cost, quality and productivity.
  • Displays a quantitative, fact-based approach to decision making, problem solving, and resource management
  • Directs people, processes, and systems and resolves complex problems.
  • Creates and improves corporate project management standards and specifications
  • Creates, captures, and improves best project management practices
  • Travel required: 30% or more as needed.
  • Collaborates with ALAM Executive Leadership and other senior management and stakeholders to ensure the department’s deliverables support business goals.
  • Assigns tasks to others; receives no instructions on routine work and minimal instruction on new assignments
  • Interacts regularly with functional level peers, junior functional area staff, and all levels of management
  • Trains the company on fundamentals of project controls
  • Successfully complete required trainings
Required & Preferred Qualifications


  • BS or MS in Engineering
  • 10+ years project management or project controls experience
  • 10+ years as an engineering functional manager, including preparation of performance appraisals for direct reports
  • Strong safety and quality skills and mindset. 
  • Proven ability to drive positive safety and quality culture through actions and behaviors
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to accomplish critical goals under pressure with frequently changing priorities
  • Superior problem solving and decision making skills

  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed, including international travel
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision


  • Project Management Certification (PMP) and at least four significant projects managed as the top project manager following Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) practices since receiving PMP certification.  At least one of these projects must have had a total value of at least $15MM.
  • Experience in a rapid growth environment
  • Participation in industry standard-setting organizations
  • Experience in the manufacture or use of ultrahigh purity materials supplied to the semiconductor industry
  • Six Sigma Black Belt 
  • MBA
