While reporting to the Plant Manager, the Safety Manager is responsible for achieving a high level safety culture in the plant through Safety Training, employee safety programs, safety audits and investigations.  Working closely with Division Safety, this individual will use their training and knowledge to continually improve the safety culture in the plant.

This is a skilled safety manager position; as always safety takes precedence over any duties of the job.  The roles and responsibilities are as follows:

  • Lead the Exeter plant Global Gap Audit Team, including scheduling, coordinating, executing the audits, and reporting monthly on audit corrective actions.
  • Manages plant project initiatives to completion, such as LCE Standard implementation, strategic projects for plant improvement including capital projects.
  • Manages annual training to ensure trainings are current and cover requirements.
  • Maintains familiarity with current state and federal environmental compliance and OSHA regulations applicable to the division and plants. To join programs for the local state and maintain compliance with all OSHA/Cal OSHA/SONOCO safety standards.
  • Ensures the Exeter location has the necessary documentation on safety related topics, training documentation, and other safety related items.
  • Manage the required safety training tracking in JJ Keller and ensure all follow up training is completed by the champion of the topic.
  • Host monthly safety committee meetings and document the team’s progress.
  • Tracking and analyzing plant safety metrics.
  • Assist with training needs at the plant (mobile equipment, Energy Isolation, etc.)
  • Assist with all investigations including close calls, medical first aid, or other incidents.
  • Assists with the development and conducts safety related training for employees. Ensures the safety training is up to SONOCO/OSHA standards.
  • Assists in the development of JSA’s, and HECP’s. Ensures annual reviews are being conducted.
  • Ensures all safety rules are being met and respected throughout the plant.
  • Attend division safety calls to ensure plant is up to date on any changes in the safety program.
  • Proactive and creative in finding and implementing new ideas to improve safety and reduce risk to our people.
  • Possesses a high sense of urgency to act, respond to employee / plant issues, and push initiatives to completion.
  • Strong problem solving and root cause analysis skills.
  • Devotes 70% of time at plant level on the floor communicating, observing, and educating employees. This includes any follow up action items, key safety metrics, or relevant safety issues.
  • Directly assists Plant Manager in the responsibility of the department Safety Program.  Ensures plant safety rules and requirements are met and is expected to be a leader for safety program implementation.  Works with department management to ensure all necessary safety training is updated, complete, and documented.  A key member of the management team working with supervisors, leaders, and team members to ensure the safety of all individuals in the department.
  • Provides guidance for programs and techniques to enhance safety awareness and maintain employee motivation regarding safety.
  • Assists in maintaining necessary documentation on safety related items involving historical data, inspection records, training of employees and other safety related items.
  • Acts as active member of the Safety Committee.  Ensures active involvement of the Safety Committee throughout the department.  Conducts monthly safety audits and compiles audit results and tracks safety indexes.
  • Assist with the investigation of all injuries.  Make appropriate recommendations to prevent recurrence.

This position is in the Perimeter of Store Plastics Plant in Exeter, CA.

  • You will need to be Sonoco mission driven
  • You will need 5 years’ experience in a safety position preferably in a manufacturing environment
  • You will need a 4 year bachelors (Preferably in EHS/Safety)
  • ASP or GSP Preferred or plant to pursue
  • You will need to have knowledge of all company/divisional/plant safety rules/regulations; knowledge of state/federal safety regulations and knowledge of plant operations. 
  • Proficient computer skills, word processing and software understanding.
  • Strong communication skills verbal, written and phone.
  • Organization and time management.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and diagrams.
  • Strong people skills and establishing/maintaining vendor relations.
  • Maintaining technical knowledge; course training and continued education required.
  • 30-hour OSHA General Industry, Train the trainer on safety topics such as: mobile equipment, fall protection, etc.
