Position Description

The Science and Technology Partnerships and Outreach (S&TPO) organization is one of five directorates at Argonne comprised of diverse individuals with scientific, business, and operations backgrounds. S&TPO’s mission is to catalyze partnerships, capture new opportunities, and connect to the innovation ecosystem for the purposes of enhancing and expanding the impact of Argonne’s science and technology. S&TPO directly supports and manages a significant volume of activity, including a portfolio of over 600 patents and more than 100 reported inventions, several hundred federal funding transactions, over 100 new partnership agreements, and dozens of commercialization and funding proposals every year. In addition, ongoing engagement with industry partners is critical to our success. 

S&TPO is seeking a Commercialization and Capture Director to define the strategy and direction to partner with Argonne researchers to catalyze programs, agreements, and commercialization efforts, as well as capture new opportunities. The Director will lead a team of approximately 15 team members and will report to the S&TPO Associate Laboratory Director. 

Job Description

The Director will provide strategic alignment and integration across the business development, sponsored research, and program capture efforts. This position offers high visibility to senior leaders at Argonne and the Department of Energy (DOE). It requires vision and leadership to conceive and implement processes and capabilities to achieve results, and to effectively engage with internal laboratory leadership and senior personnel in pertinent areas of DOE. The successful candidate will provide leadership while advancing how licensing and commercialization efforts are conducted at the Laboratory. This leader will develop Argonne’s intellectual property portfolio management strategy, develop licensing and commercialization strategies, help build industrial partnerships, support establishment of novel agreement mechanisms, grow program development opportunities, and support strategic capture to help fulfill Argonne’s mission to accelerate science and technology for U.S. prosperity and security.

A key objective of this position is to ensure Argonne’s recognition as a continuing source of high-impact science, technology, and engineering and attract additional business development opportunities. As the chief advocate for technology commercialization, this leader will collaborate with R&D divisions to develop industry partnerships, as well as establish and build strategic relationships with Laboratory leadership, DOE, and other entities. The leader will also collaborate with strategic initiative leaders and support development of industry partnership strategies. The successful candidate will work with other internal stakeholders to proactively manage potential conflict of interest and financial risks to the lab. This role establishes and develops relationships with Laboratory staff through coaching and collaborating on commercialization, partnership agreement, and program development efforts, while providing leadership and management to direct reports.

Position Requirements

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Track record of demonstrated success with program development, sponsored research agreements, licensing, and commercialization methods and approaches that are required to effectively engage with external partners.
  • Demonstrated experience and success in leading, managing, developing, and retaining high-performing professional talent, including evaluating employee performance; setting team and individual expectations and goals; creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment; and focusing on development and teamwork.
  • Successful track record in negotiating with internal and external parties to form strategic partnerships and successfully implement programs for mission impact.
  • Extensive knowledge and expertise in intellectual property, technology development, and commercialization with an understanding of market needs, trends, and priorities in the development/deployment of advanced technologies.
  • Knowledge of technology development and commercialization processes, including patent, liability, conflict of interest issues, and financial and institutional aspects.
  • Experience in working with broad constituencies that include scientific and technical staff, professional staff, senior management in government, private sector organizations, and communications media.
  • Proven track record in management functions such as planning, organizing, directing, controlling and evaluating.
  • Experience in working under pressure with competing deadlines and priorities, maintaining integrity and confidentiality of information.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Skills and experiences in establishing and maintaining effective interpersonal relationships; handling conflict resolution, gaining cooperation of others, and negotiating matters of significance in a team environment.
  • Preferred experience in successfully leading a business/program/product development organization.
  • Advanced degree in science or engineering.
