Join a team that designs, develops and integrates highly complex systems for space within Honeywell Aerospace. We are integral in building system solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers. You will be involved in every aspect of the systems life cycle; from the front end of business development through product end of life. Apply engineering knowledge, tools, and principals to develop systems for current space optical instrumentation hardware developments and on preparatory studies for new space optical and science instrumentation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide thermal control design and technical leadership on programs, including optical remote sensing payloads, optical communications terminals, and astronomy instruments.
  • Work with multi-disciplinary engineering teams to develop complex next-gen optical telescopes and instruments for space communications and deep-space research.
  • Conduct steady-state and transient thermal analyses to establish acceptable thermal environments using recognized analysis packages (NX preferred).
  • Conduct structural-thermal analysis to confirm optical performance over the environment. (STOP Structural-Thermal-Optical-Performance).
  • Identify and model performance of materials and finishes and suggest changes and improvements to performance, endurance and cost.
  • Conduct research and investigations into new materials.
  • Conduct and support TVAC thermal testing including fixturing, instrumentation and equipment setup in complex thermal and thermal-vacuum chambers.
  • Support manufacturing in implementing MLI designs into working hardware.
  • Produce complex and comprehensive analysis reports.
  • Suggest strategies for and design and support the manufacturing of complex thermal blankets (MLI).
  • Mentor junior engineers and grow team breadth.

The Honeywell building is a controlled goods program environment. Candidates must be eligible for CGP clearance.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience with thermal design, analysis, implementation and testing.


  • Graduate degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent
  • Experience with stead-state and transient modeling of electronics and structures.
  • Experience with optical structures or optical communications systems is an asset.
  • Capable with one or more recognized CAD design and analysis package. The NX suite of CAD tools is an asset.
  • A demonstrated ability to work in a team environment with a drive for problem solving.
  • Experience in the design of thermal control systems and analysis for spacecraft would be considered an asset.
  • Capable of performing in a remote team’s environment, a self-starter who requires minimal hands-on guidance to stay on schedule and plan.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Capable of government security and CGP clearances.
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience implementing Design for Manufacturing and Cost efficiency.
  • Expert knowledge of design and development process tools and technologies and broad knowledge of adjacent design disciplines.
  • Familiarity with space grade components & selection would be an asset. 
  • Individuals who are self-motivated and able to work with little supervision.
  • Ability to consistently demonstrate business impact and continuous drive for improvement.
  • Ability to influence customers and cross-functional teams to deliver optimal outcomes.
  • Ability to consistently make timely decisions and balancing systematic analysis with decisiveness.
