Clinical Research Director- SOM: Cancer Center Department Name- Sacramento Campus Department Description The UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center (UCDCCC) is a matrix organization under the aegis of UC Davis Health and University of California, Davis. Designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Center is a clinical and research enterprise consisting of over 300 faculty members from the Davis, Sacramento and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory campuses with research funding totaling $46M and a robust Clinical Research Program with over 150 trials (Phase I-III) open to accrual at any given time. The UC Davis Cancer Care Network (CCN) is a national model for optimizing integrated, collaborative cancer care. The Cancer Care Network extends the UC Davis NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center to community cancer centers throughout Northern and Central California providing leadership, clinical care, research, clinical trials and education for diverse communities. The Cancer Care Network has two LLC sites, one LLC satellite campus and three affiliate campuses. The CCN is in the process of adding several additional LLC sites to its portfolio in Northern and Central California. THIS IS NOT AN H1- B OPPORTUNITY Responsibilities The Cancer Center Clinical Research Director is responsible for working with the network affiliates to develop and implement an appropriate infrastructure for the management and conduct of clinical trials across the sites. The incumbent is responsible for short-and long-term strategic planning; fiscal oversight; leadership; resource management; design and development of operational and financial programs; personnel administration, and regulatory compliance activities to support the Network's goals. The Cancer Care Network continues to grow in scope and research activity. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that the standard operating procedures as established by the Cancer Center's Office of Clinical Research are adapted and implemented to meet the needs of the CCN. The Cancer Center Clinical Research Director works closely with counterparts at UCDCCC, with the affiliate partners, and the University (Regional Affiliations, Contracting, Sponsored Programs, Legal Counsel, Accounting, Human Resources and Purchasing). The incumbent also represents the CCN on University/Hospital committees as needed, participates in task forces related to network clinical trial activities in NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers, and serves as a liaison at the state and federal level to advance clinical research interests as well as community outreach. The Cancer Center Clinical Research Director is charged with managing a core group of clinical research services sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, industry partners, discretionary funds from institutional or philanthropic sources and third-party payers. The effective performance of multidisciplinary clinical research requires a stable infrastructure that provides support for securing and managing clinical trials. The incumbent will work closely with the Cancer Care Network Director to assesses clinical trial feasibility and infrastructure needs at existing Cancer Care Network sites and new joint ventures throughout Central and Northern California. As new sites and programs are planned the incumbent will review the clinical research organizational structure for appropriate staffing and services to comply with all contract, programmatic, and compliance (IRG, FDA, NCI, and UCD) requirements. Required Qualifications Extensive experience with clinical research trials management specifically in a university or healthcare environment. Leadership and/or management experience including long-range planning to support program sustainability. Extensive knowledge of clinical research concepts, federal, state and local laws and regulations, and industry requirements regarding the proper conduct of clinical trials (FDA, IRB, NCI and NIH guidelines). Experience with clinical and patient safety standards and regulations relating to clinical research. Experience with all phases of clinical research, from study startup through closeout and primary publication and presentation. Knowledgeable about clinical studies involving complex trial design issues. Demonstrated management experience and/or skills supervising, maintaining and developing clinical staff within the study team, and acting as a mentor for professional staff and conducting reviews and performance evaluations. Experience working collaboratively with other cross-functional teams and people with a wide range of educational backgrounds. Demonstrated excellent problem-solving and analytical skills to addresses complex or new problems; to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution. Strong communicator; includes verbal and written, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills. Financial management experience. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of the financial practices in the School of Medicine, UC Budget office and UC Davis Medical Center. Knowledgeable of University personnel and labor policies, financial systems, research process, contracts and grants, etc. Special Requirements This position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
