Position Information: Position Title: Lecturer of Biological/Pre-Medical Illustration Appointment Type: Faculty Job Description: Summary of Duties and Responsibilities: The Biological/Pre-Medical Illustration Program (BPMI) in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Department of Art and Visual Culture (AVC) in the College of Design at Iowa State University is offering a Lecturer position in BPMI. This position is part-time, starting August 16th, 2021.  This position teaches digital sculpting (ZBrush) for BPMI 494, Special Topics in Illustration , during fall term, including digital workflows and best practices and protocols for working in the ZBrush and associated digital environments. Qualified candidates will bring new approaches, tools, and techniques to digital rendering while maintaining principles of scientific illustration to their teaching. Required Minimum Qualifications: MFA/MA/MS/M.Sc.BMC/MSMI, or similar degree in scientific/medical illustration/visualization, or related field. Experience teaching modeling of educational scientific content in a digital sculpting environment (preferably ZBrush). Evidence of professional development must be presented, including professional practice examples, exhibitions, publications, and/or workshops. Preferred Qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education. Ability to distill complex content for effective visual story-telling. Knowledge of visual conventions applied to a variety of subsets of art, science, and design. Trained in traditional and digital techniques and visual communication principles. Ability to teach in an interdisciplinary setting. Experience in digital media and digital rendering as well as scientific illustration/visualization. Department/Program & College Description: Iowa State Universityâ??s interdepartmental undergraduate major in Biological and Pre-Medical Illustration (BPMI) is a shared program of the ISU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) and the College of Design (CoD). The program is housed in the CoD and administered by an advisory board of faculty members from both colleges. The BPMI major is designed for students who want to combine their interests and aptitudes in science and art. Students take a mix of courses concentrated on the natural sciences in LAS and studio art in Design. They learn the latest artistic techniques, visual design skills, and the business of being a visual communicator. They become proficient in producing a broad range of artwork, including drawings, paintings and photographs, which are scientifically accurate and aesthetically pleasing. Award-winning faculty members with years of professional and academic experience and an advisory board of scientists and artists help direct, advise and mentor students through their academic careers. Iowa State University has one of the longest-running undergraduate programs of this type in the nation. Fewer than a dozen such programs or opportunities exist for undergraduate studies in the U.S. The ISU BPMI program specializes in preparing students for graduate degree programs in medical and scientific illustration. Graduate schools often recommend students receive a bachelorâ??s degree from Iowa State because of the strength of the combined science and art components of our program.
